On average, 95%* less CO2 emissions than the car

The more people use the train, the better it is for the environment. In the Netherlands, 20% of carbon dioxide emissions are caused by traffic and transport. If you travel by train you are responsible for an average of 95% less CO2 emissions than when travelling by car.

On the train

You can make a difference by travelling by train. If all the drivers in the Netherlands made one 60 km return journey by train each year rather than going by car, it would result in a significant reduction in CO2-emissions. This is equivalent to the annual electricity usage of all the inhabitants of a city the size of Arnhem.

Increasing occupancy

The best way to use energy more efficiently is to carry more passengers at times when there is space on the trains. NS stimulates off-peak travel by offering cheaper season tickets, among other things.
