Energy efficiency

NS has a large degree of control over its energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions. Driving, warming, cooling and lighting of trains makes up approximately 90% of NS's electricity use. The rest of the electricity is used in offices and stations.


Long term agreements

The NS has a Meerjarenafspraak (multi-annual agreement) with the government, in which it has agreed to a realise a minimum 2% annual improvement in energy efficiency based on total energy use. In addition, NS has set itself the goal of being 50% more efficient in 2020 than it was in 2005. Since 1997, NS has participated in the so-called MeerJarenAfspraken (MJA). This is an instrument used by the government to stimulate energy efficiency.

Energy efficient trains

Modern trains, such as the Sprinters (SLT) and the renewed DubbelDekker (DDZ), use up to one third less electricity than their predecessors. Read more about the DDZ in the documents below. Better energy efficiency is an important point of concern when purchasing or renewing trains. For example, NS has made adjustments to trains resupply braking energy to the overhead lines. Trains in the surrounding area can then reuse this electricity. This year, the modernised double decker trains (VIRM 1) will start running. These trains are equipped with a more efficient climate control system and an intelligent lighting system which adjusts the level of lighting based on the amount of sunlight available. In 2018, new Sprinters will start running and in 2021, new Intercity's will start running. These trains are more energy efficient than their predecessors and materials are used more efficiently during their renewal.

Energiezuinig Rijden (EZR)

The NS employees have a key role to play in the efficient use of energy. In 2011, we introduced a national programme for the efficient driving and scheduling of trains. To do this, it is necessary to invoke the expertise of the train personnel. By departing on time, accelerating smoothly and using the train's momentum, the driver can save significant amounts of electricity. Energy can also be saved when parking the trains. Trains are turned off in order to avoid wasting energy in 'stand-by' mode. In 2015, this allowed us to save 8 GWh when compared to the previous year.

Energy efficient buildings

We are installing more and more heat pumps in offices and at stations, and when replacing or renovating buildings, we choose to use energy efficient materials and installations, and install insulated doors and smart meters. We also stimulate energy efficient behaviour among our employees.
