Forgetting to check in or out?
If you have forgotten to check in for your journey, you may be fined for travelling without a valid ticket. If you do not check out at the end of your journey, then you will be charged the entry fee or the corrective fee if you are using an NS-Business Card. You can reclaim these fees via Mijn NS or Mijn NS Zakelijk. You can also register for the check out alert service from NS Extra, so that you immediately receive an email if you forget to check out.
Forgotten to check in?
If you realise that you have forgotten to check in with your OV-chipkaart after walking past the gates, try to go back and do so before you enter the train. Make sure that you do this at a pole or on the check-in side of a gate. Have you already boarded the train? Then the conductor may issue a fine because you do not have a valid ticket.
When you forget to check in
If you forget to check in, two things can happen:
- At check-out poles: You try to check out on arrival. Because you have not yet checked in, the system sees this as check in. If you realise this quickly enough, then you can simply check out again. If you do not check out, this will be seen as a missed check out. You can the ask for a refund via Mijn NS or, if you do not have a Mijn NS account, via the online form.
- At gates: You check out, resulting in a check out. However, the system blocks the missed check in, which makes it impossible to request a refund via Mijn NS. A refund can only be requested via NS Customer Service
You can ask for money back via Mijn NS a maximum of 3 times per calendar year when you forget to check in. After that you can only do so via NS Customer Service.
Forgotten to check out?
Have you forgotten to check out after your train journey, then you can still check out for up to 6 hours afterwards at an NS pole or gate. Make sure you do this on the check out side of the gate. If you do not check out you will be charged the boarding fee. The amount of this fee depends on the season ticket you are using. If your entry fee or corrective fee is higher than the ticket price of the journey for which you forgot to check out, then you can reclaim the difference 3 times per calendar year via Mijn NS or online without a Mijn NS account. New: the check out alert service from NS Extra!
If you forget to check out, then you will automatically receive an email with which you can quickly and easily rectify this. Register for this service from NS Extra!
Have you forgotten to check out with your NS-business Card, then you can still rectify this by checking in until 4.00 the following morning. If you do not check out with your NS-Business Card then you will be charged the corrective fee. With the NS-Business Card it is possible to rectify forgotten check outs from the 9th day after the journey date a maximum of 5 times per calendar year via Mijn NS Zakelijk. Card holders can claim a forgotten check out up to 3 months after the journey date. The difference between the corrective fee and the actual journey price is then refunded in the next invoice.
Traject Vrij season ticket and forgetting to check out
With Traject Vrij your journeys are always charged to your bank account. You do not need an entry fee with this season ticket. If you forget to check out then you can still check out at an NS pole or gate on the same day up to 6 hours after checking in. If it is already too late or you are unable to make it to the station to check out, then for a maximum of 3 times per year you can ask for a refund via ‘Mijn Reishistorie’ in Mijn NS or Mijn NS Zakelijk. This is only possible for journeys made with NS. If you forget to check out when travelling with a different train company, then please contact the relevant company.
Good to know: if you have not checked out, you will be charged a fine of € 10.
Other information about checking in and out
Not enough balance on your OV-chipkaart?
If there is insufficient balance on your OV-chipkaart then you will not be able to check in. Top up your balance at an NS Ticket Machine so that you can travel without hindrance, or look for an OV-chipkaart charging point in your area via the address finder.
If your card is linked to your bank account then you do not need to top up its balance.

Do you just want to wave goodbye to someone or buy something at the station?
This is still possible, even if there are gates at the station. If you check in and then check out within an hour, the entry fee will be refunded. You can also check out mid-journey, for example to buy a newspaper, a cup of coffee or a sandwich. If you check in within 35 minutes then you will not be charged extra and the interruption is considered to be a transfer.
