Requesting a refund when you forget to check out

If you forget to check out, you can request a refund. If you do that within 6 months of your journey via Mijn NS or NS Customer Service, then you may receive a refund.


When you check in at a gate or pole, NS calculates a boarding rate that is dependent on what type of season ticket you use.

Boarding rate per season ticket

  • For an anonymous or personal OV-chipkaart, the boarding rate is € 20.
  • For an OV-chipkaart with Dal Vrij, Weekend Vrij, Dal Voordeel, Altijd Voordeel or Voordeelurenabonnement, the boarding rate is € 10. For the Weekend Vrij and Dal Vrij, you only pay a boarding rate if you travel outside of the period in which you are eligible for unlimited travel.
  • No boarding rate is charged when you use an Altijd Vrij or Traject Vrij season ticket.
  • With an NS-Business Card, you travel on account and pay no boarding rate.

Refunds for overcharges

If your actual travel costs are lower than the boarding rate, then you have been charged too much for your journey. In that case, you can request a refund via Mijn NS, online without a Mijn NS account via this link or viaNS Customer Service after 24 hours, and up to 6 months after your journey. In Mijn NS, you can state which station you had intended to check in and out at, and you can enter your bank account number. We will then correct your balance by calculating the amount that you should have been charged for that journey. We will then refund the excess amount paid. If your journey was more than 6 months ago, then you can no longer request a refund.

Requesting a refund when you forget to check in or out with your NS-Business Card

When you forget to check in or out with your NS-Business Card, we cannot calculate the price of your journey, so we will charge a correction fee to your invoice. The correction fees may differ per season ticket. This is always billed via the invoice.

Did you forget to check in or out with your NS-Business Card in the bus, tram or metro?

If you use your NS-Business Card in the bus, tram or metro, then the terms and conditions of the transportation company apply to the journey. We will charge the costs declared by that company to your invoice. If you have an OV Vrij season ticket, then no correction rate will be charged, because you can travel freely by bus, tram and metro. For supplemental season tickets and the NS-Business Card without season tickets, the bus, tram and metro companies will charge a correction fee. You can find this correction fee in your travel history in Mijn NS Zakelijk after the transport company has provided this information.

If you would like to request a refund after you forget to check in or out, you can call NS Zakelijk Customer Service of send an e-mail to: NSZakelijk@ns.nl. You may request refunds from any non-NS transport company offering this service up to 3 x per year (for example: 1 x for GVB, 2 x for EBS). The € 4 fine will then be corrected on your next invoice.

Requesting refunds from other rail companies

If you forget to check in or out with your OV-chipkaart when traveling with a rail company other than NS, you must contact that company. NS will not refund the costs for these journeys.
