The school holidays are over
Over the next few weeks, you may notice that the trains are more crowded on most routes than you have become accustomed to over the past few months. This is because the summer holidays are over, so more people are travelling to and from work and students are returning to their studies. So the trains will be more crowded as a result.
Longer trains during rush hour
In order to deal with the extra passengers, we will run lengthened trains during the morning and evening peak periods. This will help to add more seating for passengers where possible.
Overview of lengthened trains (top 5)
|Amsterdam Centraal||Utrecht Centraal||During the morning and afternoon peak hours|
|Ede-Wageningen||Arnhem||During the morning and afternoon peak hours in both directions|
|Gouda||Rotterdam Centraal||During the morning peak hours in both directions and during the afternoon peak hours from Rotterdam Centraal|
|Haarlem||Amsterdam Centraal||During the morning peak hours in both directions and during the afternoon peak hours from Amsterdam|
|Rotterdam Centraal||Vlaardingen||During the morning and afternoon peak hours in both directions|
All lengthened trains
Unfortunately, on several routes it is not possible to add more trains to the timetable or to lengthen the trains. This applies to several routes around Utrecht Centraal, which is undergoing renovations. As some platforms are unavailable at Utrecht Centraal, a number of trains running during the peak hours cannot be extended.
Additional improvements will be implemented in the new train schedule that will go into effect in December 2016.
Crowding indicator and current train length in the Travel planner Xtra app
We recommend that you use the Reisplanner Xtra travel planner app to plan your journey before you leave. The crowding indicator in the Reisplanner Xtra app provides an indication of the number of passengers that can be expected aboard a certain train. This number is indicated by one, two or three figures.
A new feature in the Reisplanner Xtra app is that you can now view the current length of the train. If the train is shorter than normal, due to a defect, for example, then you will see it along with the travel information. That way, you know whether to take into consideration that the train will be more crowded than usual before you leave.
Report crowding immediately
If you are aboard a crowded train, you can report it to us immediately via the Reisplanner Xtra app. This information not only helps us to make prognoses, but also to keep our crowd reports reliable and up to date.
Every day, we work to improve our services. The information from the crowding report, for example, helps us to draw up more accurate prognoses, and we are constantly working to improve our  train schedules .
