Engineering work at and around Utrecht Centraal

At Utrecht Centraal, the railway heart of the Netherlands, an enormous renovation is taking place. The number of passengers using the station-currently around 265,000 per day- will have grown to 360,000 by 2030. In order to make this growth possible, ProRail is working on a large-scale renovation of the station and the surrounding railway tracks.


Saturday, 9 July to Sunday, 17 July

Utrecht Centraal – Den Haag Centraal/Rotterdam Centraal
Utrecht Centraal – Leiden Centraal
Utrecht Centraal – Amersfoort

The schedule changes for this period are:

Weekdays from Monday to Friday

  • Between Den Haag Centraal/Rotterdam Centraal-Utrecht Centraal: Intercity's will run every half hour instead of every 15 minutes.
  • Between Woerden-Utrecht Centraal: Sprinters will run every half hour instead of every 15 minutes.
  • Between Leiden Centraal/Den Haag Centraal/Rotterdam Centraal–Amersfoort: travel along these routes involves extra transfers.
  • Between Utrecht Centraal–Utrecht Overvecht: only four Sprinters per hour will run along this route, instead of the usual eight. If you are travelling between Utrecht Centraal and Baarn, then we recommend that you travel via Hilversum.

Weekends

  • Between Leiden Centraal/Den Haag Centraal/Rotterdam Centraal–Amersfoort: travel along these routes involves extra transfers.
  • Between Gouda and Utrecht Centraal: Intercity's will run every 15 minutes instead of every 10 minutes.
  • Between Utrecht Centraal and Utrecht Overvecht: only four Sprinters per hour will run along this route, instead of the usual eight. If you are travelling between Utrecht Centraal and Baarn, then we recommend that you travel via Hilversum.

Alternate routes

  • Between Rotterdam Centraal – Amersfoort/Zwolle: travellers along this route can also travel with the Intercity direct. Tickets for this route will not be subject to the normal Intercity direct surcharge during this period.
    Note: bicycles are not allowed on the Intercity direct.

Amsterdam Centraal/Schiphol Airport–Nijmegen/'s-Hertogenbosch 

The schedule changes for this period are:

  • Between Amsterdam Centraal–'s-Hertogenbosch: travellers must make an extra transfer at Utrecht Centraal.
  • The Intercity's Den Helder–Nijmegen will make an extra stop at Driebergen-Zeist. On Saturday, 16 July, no trains will run between Utrecht Centraal and Driebergen-Zeist
  • Between Schiphol Airport–Nijmegen: Intercity's will run every half hour, with an extra transfer at Utrecht Centraal
  • Between Schiphol Airport–Utrecht Centraal: Intercity's will run every half hour instead of every 15 minutes. They will also make extra stops at Breukelen and Maarssen
  • Between Utrecht Centraal–Nijmegen: Intercity's will run every half hour.
  • Between Utrecht Centraal–Geldermalsen: Sprinters will run every half hour instead of every 15 minutes.
  • Between Breukelen–Driebergen-Zeist: no Sprinters will run along this route.
  • Between Driebergen-Zeist–Arnhem: Sprinters will run every half hour.

Alternate routes

  • Between Schiphol Airport and Nijmegen: travel on the Intercity Direct via Breda. Tickets for this route will not be subject to the normal Intercity direct surcharge during this period.
    Note: bicycles are not allowed on the Intercity direct.

Buses instead of trains

On weekdays:

  • Between Utrecht Centraal–Driebergen-Zeist: travellers along this route can transfer to NS-Stopbussen.
  • Utrecht Zuilen will be closed until 22 August; During this period, travellers to this station can take U-OV bus line 3.

Weekends:

  • Utrecht Zuilen will be closed until 22 August; During this period, travellers to this station can take U-OV bus line 3.
  • On Saturday, 9 July, Sunday, 10 July and Sunday, 17 July, travellers between Bunnik and Driebergen-Zeist can transfer to NS-Stopbussen. On Saturday, 16 July, NS Snel- and Stopbussen will run between Utrecht Centraal and Driebergen-Zeist.

Monday, 30 May to Friday, 19 August

Breukelen – Utrecht Centraal – Veenendaal Centrum

The schedule changes for this period are:

  • Between Breukelen – Utrecht Centraal – Veenendaal Centrum: the Sprinters in both directions will run every half hour instead of every 15 minutes.

Monday, 30 May to Sunday, 19 August

Station Utrecht Zuilen will be closed during this period due to maintenance work on the rails around Utrecht.

The inner rails along the platform at Utrecht Zuilen will be out of commission during the maintenance work, so all train traffic must be directed over the outer rails. As a result, no trains will be able to stop at Utrecht Zuilen.

NS-buses instead of trains:

  • Between Utrecht Zuilen and Utrecht Centraal: travellers can transfer to the U-OV bus line.

Alternate routes:

  • Travellers along the route Utrecht Zuilen-Maarssen-Breukelen can travel via Utrecht Centraal, then transfer to the train to Maarssen/Breukelen and beyond.

Travel with your NS ticket on U-OV buses

  • Do you have an NS-abonnement?
    Your NS-abonnement is valid in all U-OV buses along the route between Utrecht Zuilen and Utrecht Centraal. This means that you can travel upon display of your OV-chipkaart, and do not need to check in and out in the bus. Simply check in at an NS card reader at Utrecht Centraal.
  • Do you have an e-ticket or a single-use chipkaart from the ticket machine?
    You can travel along the route Utrecht Zuilen-Utrecht Centraal upon display of your ticket. You do not need to check in and out in the bus.
  • Do you have an OV-chipkaart without an NS-abonnement?
    Simply check in and out in the U-OV bus. If you are travelling on from Utrecht Centraal by train, you can check in with NS there.

Note: The above U-OV bus arrangement is only valid in U-OV bus line 3, on the route between the stops Marnixlaan – Utrecht Centraal .

Valid ticket

To use the NS bus, you need a valid NS ticket. When using an OV-chipkaart you travel with the rail replacement bus service in the same way as you travel by train. You check in at the start of your journey, including when your journey starts with a bus service. You check out with your OV-chipkaart at your destination.
