Night trains

The night train offers a fast and comfortable way to travel overnight. In the Randstad, night trains run every night; outside the Randstad, mainly at weekends.

Where and when does the night train run?

In the Randstad

  • Every night from Rotterdam via The Hague HS, Leiden, Schiphol, Amsterdam Central to Utrecht Central.

Outside the Randstad

  • Between Utrecht and Amersfoort: on Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday nights.
  • Between Utrecht and Arnhem/Nijmegen: an extra late train.
  • Between the Randstad and the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe: an extra late train on the night from Friday to Saturday.

Extra late trains (around 1 am) on the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday:

  • Amsterdam – Amersfoort – Deventer (via Amersfoort, with a change en route to Zwolle)
  • Amsterdam – Haarlem
  • Amsterdam – Alkmaar
  • Utrecht – Rotterdam
  • Rotterdam – Utrecht – Amersfoort – Zwolle (via Amersfoort, to Deventer; to Arnhem/Nijmegen via Utrecht)
  • Rotterdam – Eindhoven
  • Utrecht – Eindhoven

How often do the night trains run?

  • Night trains run after the last regular train until early morning.
  • They run approximately every hour on these routes.
  • On the night from 31 December to 1 January, night trains start running from around 1 am.

How do I pay for the night train?

Travel with your OV-chipkaart or NS-Business Card by checking in and out. If you do not have an OV-chipkaart or NS-Business Card, buy an e-ticket online or a single-use chip card from an NS Ticket Machine or NS Tickets & Service shop.

A ticket for the night train costs the same as during the day.

Good to know

  • Not all supervised bicycle storages are open 24 hours a day
  • Assistance is not guaranteed at night for broken luggage lockers
  • Taxis are available overnight at Amsterdam Central, Rotterdam Central and The Hague Central
