Card has almost expired
An OV-chipkaart has to be replaced after five years. You can see the validity date on the front of your OV-chipkaart at the bottom right. If your card has expired, you no longer have a valid ticket. Not even if the NS season ticket on your OV-chipkaart is still valid! You should therefore make sure that you get a new card in time

Personalised OV-chipkaart with an NS season ticket
If you have an NS season ticket, you will receive a message from OV-chipkaart Customer Services in plenty of time. You will be asked to apply for a new card using the enclosed form. On ov-chipkaart.nl you can find out when your new card will be delivered.

Anonymous OV-chipkaart
When your anonymous OV-chipkaart expires, you will not receive a message from OV-chipkaart Customer Services. After all, they do not have your personal details. You must therefore keep an eye on the validity date of your card yourself.


Card has almost expired

If your OV-chipkaart has almost expired, you will need a new card. Without a valid OV-chipkaart, you do not have a valid ticket - even if your season ticket has not expired yet. On this page you can read more about what you should do if your card has almost expired.

Personalised OV-chipkaart with an NS season ticket

You will receive a letter asking you to apply for a new OV-chipkaart. Your season ticket and any other products will be loaded automatically onto your new card. If there was still a credit balance on your card, it will be reimbursed and paid back into your account. If you use the automatic top-up feature, you will have to reactivate it at an NS ticket machine or at one of the other pick-up points.

The validity date of your OV-chipkaart is unrelated to the validity period of your season ticket. You will therefore continue paying for your season ticket even if you do not apply for a new card. Despite your season ticket continuing, an expired OV-chipkaart can no longer be used as a valid ticket. You should therefore always apply for a new card in time!

NS pays for NS season ticket holders' cards

A new OV-chipkaart normally costs €7.50. We are happy to reimburse this sum to our season ticket holders. You will receive a letter from us even before OV-chipkaart Customer Services sends you a letter about replacing your OV-chipkaart. The letter tells you how we will make sure that you are reimbursed the sum of €7.50 that you pay to OV-chipkaart Customer Services.

Anonymous OV-chipkaart

OV-chipkaart Customer Services do not have your personal details and so cannot warn you when your card has almost expired. You therefore have to keep an eye on this yourself. If your card has almost expired, you can buy a new one. You can do this at NS ticket machines and at NS service desks at the station. You can also go to ov-chipkaart.nl.
