The train: CO2 emission free travel

The more people use the train, the better it is for the environment. In the Netherlands, 20% of carbon dioxide emissions, and air pollution, are caused by traffic and transport. If you travel by train, you are not causing any CO2 emissions. The train is the most sustainable method of transport.

On the train

You can make a real difference by taking the train. If all the drivers in the Netherlands made a 60 km return journey once per year using the train instead of their cars, there would be a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. This reduction would be equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of a city the size of Arnhem.

Increasing train occupancy

The best way to use energy more efficiently is to carry more passengers at times when there is space on the trains. NS stimulates off-peak travel by offering more affordable season tickets.
