We try to sustainably process all the waste that we produce at the station, on the train, at industrial sites and in offices so that it can be reused as raw materials. Our priorities are to increase the possibilities for reuse and decrease the size of waste streams.
Reducing and recycling waste
NS wants to recycle waste into raw materials, in collaboration with its suppliers. We would like sustainably process all the waste that we produce at the station, on the train, in workshops and in offices so that it can be reused as raw materials. In our offices and workshops, we already separate more than two thirds of all waste. Among other things, paper, plastic, metal, wood and organic waste are separated, removed and recycled.
NS has set a goal to recycle 75% of its waste by 2020. Together with the Ministry of I&E and ProRail, NS signed the Green Deal in early 2015. We will be expanding our facilities for separated waste processing in trains and at stations. We will also be looking at ways to reduce wastage and increase possibilities for reuse at the purchasing stage.
