How to use your student travel product.

Once you have downloaded a weekly or weekend season ticket to your personal OV-chipkaart, you are ready to go!

In practice

Simply check in and out by holding your OV-chipkaart against the card reader on the post or gate. That's all you have to do. But what about when you want to travel at a different time, and need a balance on your card? Or if you lose your OV-chipkaart?? Read what to do in these situations here.

Checking in and out required

You are always required to check in and out when you travel by train, bus, tram or metro using your student travel product. Make sure to use the correct post or gate when checking in and out. For example, if you are transferring from NS to another rail carrier, you must check out with NS and then check in with the other carrier. Or when transferring from the train to the bus, you must check out at the station and check in at the bus. This applies even when you are entitled to free travel, because otherwise your OV-chipkaart cannot be used as a valid ticket.

Travelling on balance

When you travel outside of the times when you are entitled to free travel, you must have a balance on your card. During the discount travel hours, you receive a 40% discount on the cost of the fare. If you have a weekend season ticket, and you travel between 07:00 and 09:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, then you pay the full price of the fare. For the rest of the day you can travel with a 40% discount. You must have a minimum amount on your card balance to check in, as that amount will be deducted from your balance at the start of your journey. When you check out again, your balance will automatically be corrected with the actual fare, and the remainder of the check-in fee will be refunded to your balance if the fare price is less than € 10.

Topping up the balance on your OV-chipkaart

  • You can top up the balance on your OV-chipkaart at any NS Ticket Machine or OV-chipkaart service point. You can select the amount yourself.
  • If you don't want to deal with the hassle of constantly topping up the balance on your card, you can request the ‘Automatic top-up’ service. When your balance drops below a certain amount, a fixed amount will automatically be added to your OV-chipkaart.

Card lost, stolen or expired

All of these problems can be easily solved online. See here for more information about how to quickly get back on the rails again.
