The City of Leeuwarden, the Province of Friesland, NS Stations and ProRail have joined together to draw up a plan for the area between the station and the city centre of Leeuwarden.
The proposed changes include a fully renovated 'gateway' to the city, and will improve Leeuwarden's function as a public transportation junction for the entire region. The engineering works should be completed by the end of 2017, as Leeuwarden has been named Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. In order to make the area around the station a calling card for the city, the following construction work is planned: the bus station will be renovated and the underground bicycle storage facility will be expanded to accommodate 3,000 bicycles. The new bus station will be reorganised in accordance with the 'herringbone' model, which will make the station more flexible, as the buses will be parked side-by-side, making it easier to recognise where each bus is located. The new station area will receive a complete facelift, giving pedestrians and cyclists the right of way. This will create an attractive route to the city centre, while restoring the original design for the area.
