• You can change class using your Dal voordeel, Altijd Voordeel and Voordeeluren season ticket. You only pay a supplement for the journey in the other class
• For a fixed sum you can change class for a whole day with the following ticket types: Altijd Vrij, Dal Vrij, Weekend Vrij, Traject Vrij, Grens-, Jaartraject- and OV Jaarabonnment and Student travel products
• The system will charge you for changing class automatically when you check out

Changing class with Dal Voordeel, Altijd Voordeel and Voordeeluren season tickets

1. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader at the bottom right of the NS ticket machine.
2. Select 'Change class' on screen and select '1st class today' or '2nd class today'.
3. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader again. Your class has now been changed until 04.00 tonight.

The system will calculate and charge you for travelling in the other class and pay you any discount due when you check in and out.

Changing class with a Dal Vrij, Weekend Vrij, Altijd Vrij, Traject Vrij, Border, Grens-, Jaartraject- and OV-Jaarkaart and Student travel product

1. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader at the bottom right of the NS ticket machine.
2. Select 'Load other products' on screen.
3. Select '2-1 supplement'.
4. You now have a number of options open to you, depending on what kind of season ticket you have. You can see what 2-1 supplements there are in the table below. From the options available for your season ticket, select the option you want and follow the payment instructions on the NS ticket machine.
5. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader again. Your class has now been changed until 04.00 tonight.

Changing class on a Keuzedag

Would you like to travel first class with your Keuzedag? You can do this on the NS ticket machine on the day you take your Keuzedag.

1. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader at the bottom right of the NS ticket machine.
2. Select 'Change class Today: 2nd' on screen.
3. Select '2-1 supplement' option
4. Then select '2-1 supplement Keuzedag' (€ 6) and follow the payment instructions on the NS ticket machine
5. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader again. Your Keuzedag class has now been changed.

Always put your Keuzedag on your OV-chipkaart first and only then the 2-1 supplement Keuzedag.

Changing class if travelling on a prepaid OV-chipkaart but not on an NS season ticket

1. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader at the bottom right of the NS ticket machine.
2. Select 'Change class' on screen, then '1st class today' or '2nd class today'.
3. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the card reader again. Your class has now been changed until 04.00 tonight.

If you have not got an OV-chipkaart (public transport smart card) yet, or your card is about to run out in the next 8 weeks, then you can order a personal or anonymous OV-chipkaart for € 7,50. Your OV-chipkaart will then be delivered to your home within 7 working days. You can also buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart from any NS ticket machine or service counter.

Checking in and out

Hold your card up to the free-standing post or gate to check in for your train journey; then repeat the process to check out when you reach your destination. You need to check in and out with each operator, i.e. if you change to bus, tram or metro. You should check out at an NS card reader before checking in with another operator.

When can I use a 2-1 supplement?

You can use a 2-1 supplement during off-peak hours, or at any time at weekends. How much the supplement costs depends when you travel.
