Travel prepaid with a OV-chipkaart

You can put money on your OV-chipkaart and pay for your train journey quickly and easily by checking in and out. You need at least € 20 as a starting fare (in Dutch) before you can travel.

If you do not have an OV-chipkaart yourself, or if your card runs out in the next 8 weeks, you can order a personal or anonymous OV-chipkaart for € 7,50. We will send your OV-chipkaart to your home within 7 working days. You can also buy anonymous OV-chipkaarts from any NS ticket machine or service counter.

Intercity direct supplement line

You can buy an Intercity direct single supplement easily at the Supplement post on the Intercity direct departure platform. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the Supplement post card reader to pay for a single journey supplement with Intercity direct. You do not need to do anything else at the Supplement post when you arrive at your destination; but you still need to check in and out at the NS OV-chipkaart gates or posts for your normal train journey. And if you are travelling back by Intercity direct as well, just buy another Intercity single supplement from the Supplement post.

Single-use smart card

You don't pay a € 1 supplement for a single-use smart card for an Intercity direct supplement. Single-use smart cards are available from:

• NS ticket machines;
• NS service counters;
• Kiosks with NS Tickets & service;
• all other NS outlets.

E-ticket

You can also buy an Intercity direct supplement as an e-ticket online. You enter the journey you want to make and the passenger's name, and pay for your order with iDEAL; then you download and print off the e-ticket yourself and take it with you on the train. You must always check in and out at NS OV-chipkaart gates or posts or have some other valid NS ticket on you.

Using the Intercity direct Supplement post with your OV-chipkaart

When traveling with the Intercity direct you need an Intercity direct supplement if your journey includes travelling from Schiphol - Rotterdam Central or vice versa. You can buy this single supplement easily from the Supplement post. You just need to hold your OV-chipkaart up against the Supplement post on the Intercity direct departure platform. You still check in and out at NS's OV-chipkaart gates or posts as usual. You can also cancel the supplement again at the same station within 30 minutes if you think you do not need it.

1. Depart: Check in with NS at your departure station.
2. Buy supplement: Hold your OV-chipkaart up against the Supplement post card reader on the departure platform.
3. Travel: Travel by Intercity direct.
4. Arrive: Check out with NS at your destination.

What is the Toeslag Intercity direct?

The Toeslag Intercity direct is a supplement paid on Intercity direct services. You pay the supplement on your NS ticket if you are travelling on the Intercity direct between Schiphol and Rotterdam for part or all of your journey. The supplement is available for single and return journeys, and as a monthly or annual supplement with your NS season ticket.

Do you always have to pay the Intercity direct supplement if you are travelling on an Intercity direct service?

You must buy the supplement in addition to an NS ticket if you are travelling on the Intercity direct between Schiphol and Rotterdam for part or all of your journey. The supplement still has to be paid if you need to divert your journey due to disrupted services. There are 1 or 2 exceptions where the Intercity direct supplement does not apply, such as where a child is travelling with you on a Railrunnerticket.

Can I cancel an Intercity direct supplement immediately?

If you buy an Intercity direct supplement from the Supplement post with your OV-chipkaart, you can cancel it at the same station again if you think you do not need it. Hold your OV-chipkaart in front of the Supplement post to cancel the supplement.

Can I buy an Intercity direct supplement on the train too?

Customers can also buy individual supplements on board of the Intercity direct. Buying a supplement on the train costs € 5,00, plus a € 5,00 administrative charge, for a single journey.

If I buy a ticket from Amsterdam to Rotterdam from the machine, does that include an Intercity direct supplement already?

When you buy a ticket from Amsterdam to Rotterdam or vice versa, the machine will ask you if you want to travel by IC direct. If you say yes, you will get 2 single-use smart cards from the machine: one NS ticket from Amsterdam to Rotterdam and one for the supplement.
