Travelling using business day tickets
Business day tickets are single use chip cards with which you can travel by checking in and out with NS and other train carriers. For each carrier you check in at the starting station and check out at the final station in your journey.
Checking in and out with the business day ticket
With the 1 Treinreis you can check in and out once. With a 1 Dag Trein Vrij and 1 Dag OV Vrij you can travel as much as you need to for one day and check in and out throughout the day. Business day tickets are valid from the time of check in until 4.00 the following morning.
You can use business day tickets immediately upon receiving them until the stated expiration date. It is not possible to load additional balance onto the day tickets.
If you would like to use the bus, tram or metro, then you need a separate ticket to do so.
Other train, bus, tram and metro carriers
- With the 1 Treinreis you can only travel with NS and NS International trains. If you would like to travel on the bus, tram or metro or with a different train carrier, then you will require a separate ticket.
- The 1 Dag Trein Vrij can also be used to travel with other carriers. You are required to check in and out with each carrier. You check in by holding your card against the pole or gate belonging to the carrier in question. When you disembark, check out with the carrier before checking in with the next one. If you would like to use the bus, tram or metro then you will require a separate ticket.
- The 1 Dag OV Vrij can be used for all public transport in the Netherlands. You are required to check in and out with each carrier. You check in by holding your card against the pole or gate belonging to the carrier in question. When you disembark, check out with the carrier before checking in with the next one.
The business day tickets are valid on national routes on the Intercity direct (with a supplement between Schiphol and Rotterdam) and on the ICE International (with a supplement). The day tickets are not valid on the Thalys. You can use an NS ticket machine to buy a separate supplement for a single journey or a return.
Travelling from the Netherlands to another country and back
If you wish to travel from the Netherlands to another country then you must purchase a ticket from the last station before the border (Roosendaal/Hengelo). When travelling from another country to the Netherlands, you need to leave the train and check in to activate your day ticket.
Travel class and day ticket validity
Change travel class
It is not possible to change classes when travelling with a business day ticket. The class that you are allowed to use depends on the ticket. On the front of the ticket, on the top right hand side, you can see which class your ticket is valid for.
How long are business day tickets valid for?
Business day tickets are valid up to and including the date stated on the ticket. Until this date someone may travel once with each day ticket. Day tickets can be used on any day of the week at any desired time.
Combination with other NS products
Business day tickets are stand-alone products. You cannot combine them with other travel and/or discount products such as a Dal Voordeel subscription.
