NS stations
Stations play an important role in your door-to-door journey. That is why we ensure that travelling to and from the station and your time spent there are as comfortable as possible. We offer a wide range of shops and facilities to meet your needs as a traveller. This way, we help you make the most of your travel time.
NS Stations manages, operates and develops over 400 stations in the Netherlands. We place great importance on cleanliness, maintenance and safety. We also focus on creating a good balance between walking routes, service and facilities at and around the station. After all, the station is more than just a place to wait for the train.
Renovation of major stations
The arrival of the high-speed line (HSL) provided a great opportunity to significantly upgrade several stations where the HSL stops. The government decided to carry out renovations at Utrecht Centraal, Rotterdam Centraal, Den Haag Centraal, Breda, Arnhem Centraal and Amsterdam Zuid, among others. These stations are important for the entire country, so the government invested over €1 billion in these projects.
More travellers, larger stations
The number of travellers is increasing. That is why we invest in new and larger stations that can accommodate many people.
Traveller needs have also changed. You want to spend time comfortably and have access to a wide range of shops and services. In addition, a good connection to other public transport is becoming increasingly important.
The government also invested in renovating stations such as:
- Amsterdam Centraal
- Delft
- Eindhoven Centraal
- Tilburg
- Zwolle
- Alkmaar en Alkmaar Noord
- Heerlen
- Groningen
- Assen
- Ede-Wageningen
ProRail acts as the client for these renovations on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. These projects often involve collaboration with municipalities or provinces.
NS Stations and ProRail, as owners, are closely involved in redeveloping the stations.

Retail and catering at stations
At the stations, you will find shops managed by NS Stations itself, such as Kiosk, Julia’s, AH to go and StationsHuiskamers. Our offer is tailored to people on the move.
Where few businesses used to operate at stations, many large and small market players with experience in station retail are now active. This allows us to hand over parts of the operation to others.
There is also space for local entrepreneurs, such as a florist or catering business. Sometimes tenants run their own shop brand, for example Leonidas or Döner Company.
This way, we create a varied range of shops that suits the traveller.
Shops and catering also make the station safer and more comfortable. They provide convenience, create atmosphere and offer entertainment in a busy environment.
Managing cultural heritage
NS owns many historic buildings, including station buildings, signal boxes, workshops, platform buildings and water towers.
We see this heritage as an opportunity to develop attractive station areas.
Historic buildings often set the atmosphere of a place. That is why we align the area's development with what is possible within the heritage. We make such a building a recognisable icon in the station area.
Sometimes a building is given a new purpose to ensure it can be used for many years to come.
