From OV-chipkaart to OV-pas
The OV-pas replaces the OV-chipkaart. It may look like a new plastic card, but there are significant technical changes behind the scenes.
Your details are no longer stored on the card itself but in a secure online database. This makes it possible to manage more services online without needing to visit an NS Ticket Machine (although you may still do so if you wish).
A digital card will also be introduced in the future, which you can add to the Wallet on your phone.
How to travel with your OV-pas
Not much changes for you as a traveller. The OV-pas remains one card for travel by train, metro, tram and bus.
Check your costs
You will no longer see your balance or fare for your journey displayed on the gates or readers when you check out. View your journeys and costs in the OVpay app or through Mijn NS.
View and top up your balance
Check or add credit to your balance using the OVpay app. This is not yet available through Mijn NS, our NS Ticket Machines or OV Service & Tickets shops. The train conductor or service staff can also check your balance.
About OVpay
OVpay is the new way to check in and out on public transport. You can use the new OV-pas or your debit card to check in and out. This enables you to travel anywhere in the Netherlands by train, metro, tram and bus.
