OV-pas

The OV-chipkaart is being phased out after almost 15 years. A new card with updated technology is here: the OV-pas. Find out how it works and how you will switch soon.

From OV-chipkaart to OV-pas

The OV-pas replaces the OV-chipkaart. It may look like a new plastic card, but there are significant technical changes behind the scenes.

Your details are no longer stored on the card itself but in a secure online database. This makes it possible to manage more services online without needing to visit an NS Ticket Machine (although you may still do so if you wish).

A digital card will also be introduced in the future, which you can add to the Wallet on your phone.

How do I get an OV-pas?

If you have an NS season ticket, you will continue to travel with your OV-chipkaart until we notify you to switch to an OV-pas. We will start transferring subscriptions at the end of the year.

Do you have a business season ticket? Find more information about the new NS-Business Card.

Do you not have an NS season ticket?

You can order an individual OV-pas at OVpay.nl or travel using your payment card. In both cases, you will always travel in 2nd class without a discount.

Do you already have an OV-pas?

At the moment, you travel with your OV-pas on balance without a discount. We are not yet able to load NS season tickets onto an OV-pas.

How to travel with your OV-pas

Not much changes for you as a traveller. The OV-pas remains one card for travel by train, metro, tram and bus.

Check your costs

You will no longer see your balance or fare for your journey displayed on the gates or readers when you check out. Add your OV-pas to Mijn NS and view your journeys and costs related to us there.

View and top up your balance

Add your OV-pas to Mijn NS to check and top up your balance. Alternatively, you can do this at a ticket machine.

The conductor or service staff can also check your balance. This service is not yet available at OV-servicewinkel shops.

About OVpay

OVpay is the new way to check in and out on public transport. You can use the new OV-pas or your debit card to check in and out. This enables you to travel anywhere in the Netherlands by train, metro, tram and bus.
