Co-travel discount

Are you travelling during off-peak hours or at the weekend with someone you know who has an NS subscription? Join them with a co-travel discount and get 40% off your journey. If you have an NS subscription yourself, you can give a discount to up to three fellow travellers. You will be linked together with a co-travel code.

Giving co-travel discount

You can give co-travel discount if you have an NS train subscription or Student Travel Product. Only NS Flex Basis and Kids Vrij subscriptions cannot share this benefit. Share the co-travel code with your fellow travellers in Mijn NS.

Here is what you need to know about giving the co-travel discount:

  • Give up to three fellow travellers 40% off during off-peak hours and weekends.
  • This is only for travel together in the same train compartment.
  • The discount is valid until 4.00 am the next day.
  • Do not forget your ID. This lets the train conductor verify your identity.

Receiving co-travel discount

You will receive a co-travel code from the NS season ticket holder or student travelling with you, for example by e-mail or WhatsApp. With this code, you can order a Dal Off-Peak co-travel ticket in our webshop within three days or link the code to your NS Flex subscription in Mijn NS.

Here is what you need to know about receiving the co-travel discount:

  • Get 40% off and travel in the same train compartment as the season ticket holder.
  • Travel with a ticket or NS Flex subscription during off-peak hours and at weekends.
  • The ticket is valid until 4.00 am the following day.
  • Do not forget your ID. This shows the train conductor that it is really you.

How to receive the co-travel discount depends on your situation:

I do not have an NS subscription

You can use the co-travel code to order a Dal Off-Peak Co-travel Ticket in our webshop. This ticket allows you to travel immediately.

This is how you receive the co-travel discount:

  • Follow the link in the message, such as in your e-mail or WhatsApp.
  • You will be redirected to the NS app or ns.nl.
  • Select ‘Use code’ and then choose ‘I want a train ticket’.
  • Specify how many tickets you want to order and proceed with payment.
  • You will receive your ticket in your inbox so that you can either print it or show it digitally. You can also open it in the NS app.

Important: you are not allowed to travel with the Dal Off-Peak Co-travel Ticket during peak hours, even if you checked in during off-peak times.

I have an NS Flex subscription

Do you pay for your journeys afterwards? Then you have an NS Flex subscription. Use the co-travel code to add the co-travel discount to your NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel, or NS Flex Weekend Vrij subscription.

This is how you receive the co-travel discount:

  • Follow the link in the message, for example in your e-mail or WhatsApp.
  • You will be redirected to the NS app or ns.nl.
  • Select the 'Use code' button.
  • Choose ‘I have an NS Flex subscription’ and log in to Mijn NS to activate the co-travel discount.

You can travel straight away until 4.00 am the following day. If you finish travelling together earlier, check out and deactivate the co-travel discount in Mijn NS. You will then check in as a single traveller again.

Frequently asked questions about the co-travel discount

How do I share the Co-travel discount?

You share a co-travel code with the person you want to travel with.

This is how you give the discount:

  • Log in to Mijn NS.
  • You will see a box titled 'Travel together with discount' on your homepage.
  • Select 'Share co-travel code'.
  • You will see the code on the next screen.
  • Send the code to your fellow traveller.

Your fellow traveller receives your message and can use the co-travel code for three days to order a ticket. They can also link the Co-travel discount in Mijn NS to one of these subscriptions: NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.

Alternatively, you can go together to an NS Tickets & Service shop.

The train conductor will see that you are travelling together when checking tickets. Do not forget your ID.

When is the Co-travel discount valid?

You travel with a 40% discount during off-peak hours and on weekends and public holidays.

During off-peak hours
From Monday to Friday, between 9:00 and 16:00, and from 18:30 until 6:30.
Note: The Co-travel discount is valid until 4:00 the following day.

On weekends and public holidays
All day.
Important: you may not travel during peak hours with the Dal Co-travel ticket, even if you checked in during off-peak hours. If you travel with an NS Flex subscription, the time of check-in applies. In that case, you may check in during off-peak hours but still be on the train during peak hours.

Can I still activate the Co-travel discount at the NS Ticket Machine?

Since 22 April 2024, you can only get the Co-travel discount using a co-travel code from a subscriber or a student with a Student Travel Product. You can arrange the discount on ns.nl or in the NS app.
If you prefer not to buy your ticket online, you can still arrange the Co-travel discount at an NS Tickets & Service shop. Go to the shop together with the NS subscriber.

Bring along:

  • Identification document
  • OV-chipkaart, if you have an NS subscription

Note: if you are the recipient and have an NS Flex subscription, you cannot visit the service shop. Please arrange the Co-travel discount in Mijn NS on our website.

I do not have a smartphone (or the app). How do I give or receive the Co-travel discount?

Option 1: arrange the Co-travel discount via the website (ns.nl)

This is how you give the discount:

  • Log in to Mijn NS.
  • On your homepage, you will see a box titled 'Travel together with discount'.
  • Select 'Share co-travel code'.
  • You will see the code on the next screen.
  • Send the code to your fellow traveller.

This is how you receive the discount:

  • Follow the link in the message you received from your fellow traveller, for example, in your email inbox.
  • Use the code and select the 'Use code' button.
  • Choose your ticket.
  • Buy a Dal Co-travel ticket in our webshop. You can print the ticket and board the train immediately.
  • Alternatively, log in to Mijn NS to use the co-travel code with your NS Flex subscription. You will then travel using your OV-chipkaart. This applies to these subscriptions: NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.

Option 2: arrange the Co-travel discount through an NS Tickets & Service shop
Visit the NS Tickets & Service shop together with the person you are travelling with. Bring both your OV-chipkaart and ID; we will gladly assist you. If you are the recipient and have an NS Flex subscription, please arrange the Co-travel discount in Mijn NS on our website (see option 1).

Bring along:

  • Identification document
  • OV-chipkaart, if you have an NS subscription

I want to share the Co-travel discount but receive the message ‘You are not the card holder’. I am the card holder; what should I do?

Your NS account is always linked to one customer number. The message appears if the NS account you are logged into does not match the customer number. There may be multiple entries for you in our system under different customer numbers. Please contact NS Customer Service. We are happy to assist you.

Can I share the Co-travel discount if I am using Temporary Ticket Rights?

No, Temporary Ticket Rights means using substitute e-tickets instead of your OV-chipkaart with your subscription. Therefore, you cannot share the Co-travel discount.
