Checking in and out

At the station, you check in and out using your payment card, OV-chipkaart or ticket. Here is how it works.

Forgot to check out?

Do not worry, we explain what to do.

How checking in and out works

Hold your card or ticket against the card reader on the right. You will hear a beep, and the gate will open. At the end of your journey, check out the same way. You will then hear two beeps.

You can check out up to six hours after your journey. After that, it is no longer possible and a new journey begins. Only pass through gates showing a green arrow.

Checking in and out with the same operator

Always check out with the operator you checked in with. Above the card reader, you will see which operator it belongs to. NS scanners are yellow.

Passing through gates without travelling

If you want to buy something quickly or see someone off, checking out at the same station within sixty minutes is free of charge.

Checking out and in when you change trains

Sometimes you need to check out and back in when changing trains. This may be necessary to reach the correct platform or when switching to another operator.

Are you entitled to off-peak discounts?

Check the rules that apply for checking in and out with your ticket carefully. This helps you avoid paying more than necessary.
