How it works

You can rent an OV-fiets using an NS Flex season ticket on your OV-chipkaart. Order NS Flex Basis for free and pay no subscription fees.

We no longer offer a standalone OV-fiets season ticket. If you already have a standalone OV-fiets season ticket, it will continue to work as usual.

Here’s how to rent a bicycle:

  1. Find a hire location.
  2. Take an OV-fiets and unlock it with your OV-chipkaart.
  3. Adjust the saddle to the correct height and you are ready to go.

Returning your bike

Always return the OV-fiets to the same location. Close the ring lock when you return the bike and check that it is fully closed. This is the only way the hire stops.

You may hire an OV-fiets for up to seven days.

How the bike lock works

Check in the NS app that your hire has ended

Link your OV-chipkaart to Mijn NS in the app to see your OV-fiets journeys, costs and any damage. You will also receive notifications if you still have a bike on hire.

Not getting notifications? Check your settings to ensure notifications for OV-fiets hire are enabled and that your phone allows notifications.

In Mijn NS you can also view all your journeys and costs. You will receive a monthly overview.

Get an OV-fiets season ticket

If you do not yet have an NS Flex season ticket or an OV-fiets season ticket on your OV-chipkaart, add one first so you can hire an OV-fiets. Did you know one season ticket lets you hire two bikes?

Frequently asked questions

My OV-fiets has been stolen

Contact our Customer Service immediately to stop your rental. That way you avoid a large fine

Then send us an email to info@ov-fiets.nl with the subject 'OV-fiets gestolen'. Include the following in the email:

  • the OV-fiets number. You can find this in Mijn NS under Journey details. If you do not use Mijn NS, include your OV-chipkaart number
  • the rental location
  • the date and time when the OV-fiets was stolen

Tip: link your OV-chipkaart to Mijn NS so you always have insight into your OV-fiets trips.

The OV-fiets is damaged or broken

Is the OV-fiets damaged or broken? Always return the bike to the rental location and tell staff what is wrong. You can also contact the NS Customer Service.

When you report damage, please give the bike number as well. You can find this on the mudguard or the frame.

If the damage to the OV-fiets is due to careless use, you will be charged for the repairs.

How do I open the lock?

Start your rental at the rental location

Your rental starts as soon as you open the lock at the rental location.

  1. Always check first that the wheel lock is closed (lever down). This prevents you from taking a bike that someone else is still renting.
  2. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the lock. The lock will open and the rental will start.

Opening the lock while you are out and about

The lock on your bike only opens with your own OV-chipkaart.

  1. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the lock. It only opens with your card.
  2. Press and hold the button and release the chain.
