Intercity direct supplement

Are you travelling on the Intercity direct or Eurocity Direct between Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Centraal, or the other way around? You need an Intercity direct supplement in addition to your NS ticket. This surcharge is available in two forms: a single one-off surcharge or a continuing surcharge as an extra option with NS Flex.

One-off Intercity direct supplement

If you travel occasionally on the Intercity direct, you can buy an Intercity direct supplement for a single journey or a return. The surcharge for a single journey costs € 3,20. If you buy it at the Toeslagzuil you get 40% off during off-peak hours, making the supplement € 1,92.

Good to know: children with a Railrunner or a Kids Vrij season ticket do not need an Intercity direct supplement.

You also do not need a supplement when travelling with an international ticket, such as Interrail or Eurail. If you make a domestic journey, you must have an Intercity direct supplement in addition to your ticket. This also applies when travelling on the Eurocity Direct between Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Centraal, or vice versa.

How do you buy it?

You can buy the Intercity direct supplement at the Toeslagzuil on the departure platform, online as an e-ticket, at an NS Ticket Machine or at the service desk on the station.

How does the Toeslagzuil work?

  • On the departure platform, hold your OV-chipkaart, payment card, OV-pas or NS-Business Card to the reader of the Toeslagzuil. You have now bought an Intercity direct supplement for a single journey.
  • The Toeslagzuil automatically applies the off-peak discount.
  • At your arrival station, check out with NS. You do not need to do anything further at the Toeslagzuil.
  • If you travel back on the Intercity direct, repeat the above steps.
  • Want to cancel the supplement? Hold your card to the Toeslagzuil again within 30 minutes.

Intercity direct Altijd Toeslagvrij and NS Flex

If you make three or more return journeys a week in the peak on the Intercity direct and you have NS Flex, it is cost-effective to choose Intercity direct Altijd Toeslagvrij. This lets you travel unlimited on the Intercity direct for one month. You do need to have one of these NS Flex season tickets: Altijd Vrij, Traject Vrij, Dal Vrij and Weekend Vrij.

Altijd Toeslag Vrij with NS Flex costs € 74,50 per month and you can switch it on or off each month.

How do I cancel the supplement?

You can cancel an Intercity direct supplement free of charge within 30 minutes at the Toeslagzuil on the same platform where you bought it. An Intercity direct supplement bought as an e-ticket cannot be cancelled.
