Travelling abroad as a student

Do you have a Studentenreisproduct and are you travelling internationally? You may be entitled to 40% or 100% off the domestic part of your international journey in some cases. Read more about travelling by train to other countries.

Using studenten-OV to travel abroad

If you travel abroad on Eurocity Direct, EuroCity or ICE (not Eurostar or Nightjet) you may be eligible for a discount using your studenten-OV (Studentenreisproduct) in some cases. It is best to book your entire trip with NS International and indicate during booking whether you are entitled to 40% or 100% off. You will then receive an international ticket with the discount applied.

One international ticket for your whole trip

You can travel on a single ticket from your departure station in the Netherlands to your destination abroad. Are you entitled to 40% or 100% off in the Netherlands? Indicate this when you order an international ticket and NS International will apply the discount. You can then add your ticket to the NS International app.

Please note: remember to take your Dutch Studentenreisproduct with you on international trips. You must show both your studenten OV and your ticket during any checks.

Can you travel abroad with your studenten-ov?

Yes, your studenten-OV (Studentenreisproduct) can sometimes give you a discount on international journeys. Young people also get discounts on certain tickets to other countries. Read more about travelling abroad as a student.

Can you use your studenten-OV on Eurostar, ICE, Eurocity Direct or EuroCity?

If you travel abroad you may get a discount on Eurocity Direct, EuroCity and ICE services in some cases. This does not apply to Eurostar or Nightjet. (Studentenreisproduct)

Can you use your studenten-OV to travel to countries such as Belgium, Germany and France?

No, your studenten-OV (Studentenreisproduct) is only valid in the Netherlands. Tip: book a single international ticket for your entire trip via NS International. Are you entitled to 40% or 100% off the Dutch domestic segment? Tell us when you book and NS International will apply the discount to your international ticket.

What should I do with my studenten-OV if I return from abroad earlier or later than planned?
  • If you return earlier than planned, your internship is extended or your study or internship is cancelled, tell DUO as soon as you can.
  • Returning earlier? Use Mijn Duo to report that you will return earlier. Do this in the month before you want to travel again with your Studentenreisproduct.
  • Is your internship longer? Apply for an OV allowance for the extended period of your internship through DUO.
  • Is your study or internship cancelled? Tell Mijn DUO as soon as possible that you want to switch back from an OV allowance to a weekly or weekend abonnement. Do this even if you have not yet stopped your Studentenreisproduct.
