Giving Co-travel discount

How do I give Co-travel discount?

You share a co-travel code with the person you want to travel with.

Do you have an OV-chipkaart?

Here’s how to share a co-travel code:

  1. Log in to Mijn NS.
  2. You will see a box called ‘Travel together with discount’ on your homepage.
  3. Select ‘Share co-travel code’.
  4. The next screen will display the code.
  5. Send the code to your fellow traveller.

Do you have an NS-Business Card?

Here’s how to share a co-travel code:

  1. Log in to Mijn NS Zakelijk.
  2. On your homepage, go to ‘Co-travel discount’.
  3. Select ‘Share co-travel code’.
  4. The next screen will show you the code.
  5. Send the code to your fellow traveller.

What does your travel companion do with the co-travel code?

Your travel companion will receive your message and can use the co-travel code for 3 days to order a ticket or link the Co-travel discount in Mijn NS to one of these subscriptions: NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.

It is also possible to visit an NS Tickets & Service shop together.

The train conductor will see during ticket inspection that you are travelling together. Do not forget your ID.

Which subscriptions allow me to give Co-travel discount?

Check your subscription in Mijn NS or Mijn NS Zakelijk.

These are the business subscriptions that allow you to give Co-travel discount.

I want to give Co-travel discount but get the message ‘You are not the card holder’. I am the card holder, what should I do?

An NS account is always linked to one customer number. You get this message if the NS account you’re logged into does not match the customer number. Could it be that you appear multiple times in our system under different customer numbers?

Contact NS Customer Service. We are happy to assist.

Can I both give and receive Co-travel discount at the same time?

No, that is not possible. Ask another NS subscription holder or student with a Student Travel Product to share a co-travel code with you.

Is there a limit to how many codes I can give?

No, you can give out unlimited co-travel codes. Also, as a fellow traveller, you can travel with Co-travel discount as often as you want.

Can fellow travellers travel with different codes?

Yes, they can. However, you can take a maximum of three fellow travellers with you.

Can I give Co-travel discount if I use Temporary Travel Rights?

No. Temporary Travel Rights means you use replacement e-tickets instead of your OV-chipkaart with your subscription, so you cannot give Co-travel discount.

Receiving Co-travel discount

How do I receive Co-travel discount?

You receive a co-travel code from the NS subscription holder or student you want to travel with. You arrange the discount on ns.nl or in the app.

Here is how to receive the discount:

  1. Follow the link in the message, for example in your email or WhatsApp.
  2. Enter the code and select the ‘Use code’ button.
  3. Choose your ticket.
  4. Buy a Co-travel Day ticket off-peak in our webshop. You can board straight away.
  5. Or log in to Mijn NS to use the co-travel code for your NS Flex subscription. You will travel with your OV-chipkaart. This option is available for these subscriptions: NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.

If you prefer not to buy your ticket online, you can still arrange Co-travel discount at an NS Tickets & Service shop. Go there together with the NS subscription holder. Both of you should bring your OV-chipkaart and ID.

If you are the recipient with an NS Flex subscription, you cannot go to the Tickets & Service shop. Arrange Co-travel discount in Mijn NS on our website.

The train conductor will see during ticket inspection that you are travelling together. Do not forget your ID.

How do I buy a ticket for Co-travel discount?

Follow the link in the message you received from an NS subscription holder or student with a Student Travel Product. Use the co-travel code and choose ‘I want a ticket’ to order in our webshop.

Then select:

  • The route
  • Single ticket or day return
  • Date of travel
  • Number of tickets you want
  • Class

The train tickets are personal. That is why you enter the name(s) of the traveller(s) afterwards. Finally, pay using iDEAL or credit card. After payment, you can download the tickets in the NS app or print them out.

Which subscriptions allow me to receive Co-travel discount?

You can only receive Co-travel discount with NS Flex Basis, NS Flex or NS Flex Weekend Vrij. You have an NS Flex subscription when you pay for your journeys afterwards.

Can I still activate Co-travel discount at the NS Ticket Machine?

Since 22 April 2024, you can only get Co-travel discount through a co-travel code from a subscription holder or a student with a Student Travel Product. You arrange the discount on ns.nl or in the NS app.

If you prefer not to buy your ticket online, it is still possible to arrange Co-travel discount at an NS Tickets & Service shop. Go together with the NS subscription holder to the shop.

Bring with you:

  • ID
  • OV-chipkaart if you have an NS subscription

Please note: if you are a recipient with an NS Flex subscription, you cannot go to the Tickets & Service shop. Arrange Co-travel discount in Mijn NS on our website.

Can I receive Co-travel discount with my NS-Business Card?

No. You can give Co-travel discount with your NS-Business Card, but cannot receive it.

If you want to travel with Co-travel discount yourself, choose one of these options:

  1. Travel with an OV-chipkaart using NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.
  2. Buy a Co-travel ticket in our webshop.

Travelling with Co-travel discount

When is Co-travel discount valid?

You travel with 40% discount during off-peak hours and on weekends and public holidays.

During off-peak hours

From Monday to Friday, between 9.00 and 16.00 and from 18.30 to 6.30.
Please note: Co-travel discount is valid until 4.00 the next morning.

On weekends and public holidays

The entire day.

Please note: You may not travel with the Co-travel Day ticket off-peak during peak hours, even if you checked in during off-peak times. If you travel with an NS Flex subscription, the time of check-in applies. So, you might check in during off-peak hours but still be on the train during peak times.

I do not have a smartphone (and no app). How can I give or receive Co-travel discount?

Option 1: set up Co-travel discount via the website (ns.nl)

How to give the discount:

  1. Log in to Mijn NS.
  2. You will see a box titled ‘Travel together with discount’ on your homepage.
  3. Select ‘Share co-travel code’.
  4. The next screen will show you the code.
  5. Send the code to the person you’re travelling with.

How to receive the discount:

  1. Click on the link in the message you received from your travel companion, for example in your email.
  2. Enter the code and select the button ‘Use code’.
  3. Choose your ticket.
  4. Purchase a Co-travel Day ticket off-peak in our webshop. You can print the ticket and board the train immediately.
  5. Alternatively, log in to Mijn NS to use the co-travel code for your NS Flex subscription. You will travel using your OV-chipkaart. This option is available for these subscriptions: NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij.

Option 2: arrange Co-travel discount at the NS Tickets & Service shop

Visit the NS Tickets & Service shop together with the person you’re travelling with. Bring your OV-chipkaart and ID; we will gladly assist you. If you’re the recipient and have an NS Flex subscription, arrange the Co-travel discount in Mijn NS on our website (see option 1).

Bring these:

  • ID
  • OV-chipkaart if you have an NS subscription

What should I do with Co-travel discount if peak hours start during my journey?

If you travel with a ticket with Co-travel discount, you cannot stay on the train during peak hours; your ticket is invalid. Leave the train or buy a valid ticket in the NS app or on ns.nl.

If you check in during off-peak hours with an NS Flex Basis, NS Flex Weekend Voordeel or NS Flex Weekend Vrij subscription, you may stay on the train when peak hours start. The time of check-in is what counts.

Is Co-travel discount valid abroad?

Co-travel discount applies up to the Dutch border.

Where Co-travel discount applies:

  • Intercity Direct (ICD supplement)
  • Domestic sections of routes for ICE International (ICE supplement), Eurocity Direct, EuroCity and IC Berlin
  • Routes abroad where OV-chipkaart terminals are installed (for example, Aachen, Weener and Bentheim)

Where Co-travel discount does not apply:

  • Foreign sections of the route
  • International trains that require reservations (for example, Nightjet and Eurostar)

How do I stop Co-travel discount?

You only need to stop Co-travel discount yourself if you continue travelling alone the same day with your NS Flex subscription.

Ticket (Co-travel Day ticket off-peak):

The discount applies for as long as the ticket is valid. You must travel together with the subscription holder in the same train compartment.

NS Flex Basis or NS Flex Weekend Vrij subscription:

The discount stops automatically at 4.00 the next morning.

Travelling alone?

If you continue travelling alone with a ticket, buy a ticket for the route from where you no longer travel together.

Follow these steps if you have linked Co-travel discount to your NS Flex subscription.

  1. Check out at a gate or terminal of the transport provider.
  2. Stop Co-travel discount in Mijn NS.
  3. Check back in with your OV-chipkaart. You will travel at full fare.
