Line numbers for NS trains

From 13 December (2027 timetable) NS trains will have a line number. On this page you can find out what a line number is, where to look for it and what it means for your journey. The line number provides extra information to help you recognise your train more quickly.

What is a line number for trains?

A line number is a fixed number for a train route. You may already know line numbers from the bus, tram or metro. For trains it will work in much the same way.

The letters show which type of train it is. The numbers indicate which service it is.

For example: in IC6, IC stands for Intercity and 6 is the line. In S75, S stands for Sprinter and 75 is the line.

We use the following abbreviations: IC (Intercity), ICD (Intercity direct) and S (Sprinter).

How NS line numbers work

This video explains what a line number is, where you’ll see it during your journey and how it helps if a train runs differently than planned.

What does a line number mean for your journey?

A line number will make it easier to recognise your train. You can check the fixed route number as well as the departure time and destination. This helps when you plan, change trains and find the right service. It is useful if your journey does not go according to plan. Our staff can also use the line number to help you more quickly.

Clearer information during disruptions and engineering work

Is your train not running or running differently to plan? Using line numbers helps us show more precisely which trains are running and which are not.

Without line numbers: There are fewer trains running between Utrecht Centraal and Amsterdam Centraal.

With line numbers: Between Utrecht Centraal and Amsterdam Centraal, IC 39 and IC 27 are not running. IC 29 and IC 30 are running.

Where can you see your train’s line number?

From the new timetable (timetable 2027), starting on 13 December, you can find the line numbers in the Reisplanner on ns.nl and in the NS app. You can also see them on the displays in the station hall, on the signs on the platform and on the train. This gives you a clear point of reference throughout your journey.
