Fossil-free business
NS was the first train operator worldwide to run entirely on green electricity. We are now working hard on the next step in the energy transition. Our goal is to be completely fossil-free by 2040. We are starting by using less energy and carrying more travellers. For example, we developed an app for train drivers that helps them drive as efficiently as possible. This has already saved 2% energy, which is comparable to the consumption of around 6,000 households.
At our stations, depots and offices, we aim to reduce energy use by 3.5% and gas consumption by 5.5% each year. We are working hard to achieve this.
We currently operate climate-neutral by purchasing as much wind energy each year as we consume. When there is no wind, however, we still rely on fossil backup. Research shows that running our trains on solar energy as well would reduce our dependence on fossil backup. Our goal is to become completely independent. In addition, we generate energy on our own buildings and land.
For us, fossil-free business means:
- Using as little energy as possible.
- Using our own buildings and land to generate energy.
- Purchasing any additional energy needed without fossil fuels.
In short: 100% sustainable energy with no fossil backup.
