OV-vergoeding for studying or doing an internship abroad

Are you going abroad for an internship or temporary study? Find out more about the studenten-OV abroad (OV-vergoeding) and how to stop your Studentenreisproduct in the Netherlands.

OV-vergoeding for students abroad

If you are temporarily going abroad to study or do an internship, you can apply for an OV-vergoeding from DUO. That allowance replaces your Dutch Studentenreisproduct. You can receive an OV-vergoeding for abroad in these two situations:

  • You will do a full course abroad and receive student finance for it.
  • You will go abroad temporarily as part of your Dutch course, for example for a few modules or an internship. You remain enrolled as a full-time student at your Dutch institution.

Stopping your Dutch studenten-OV

Before you go abroad for study or an internship, you must stop your Dutch Studentenreisproduct on Studentenreisproduct.nl. Follow the steps and visit an NS Ticket Machine or another OV-chipkaart service point.

Want to keep your Dutch studenten-OV? You can use your Studentenreisproduct up to the Dutch border. Young travellers may also get discounts on certain international tickets. Read more about travelling abroad.

Returning from abroad: applying for studenten-OV

Are you back in the Netherlands? You can reapply for your Dutch Studentenreisproduct with DUO. Follow the steps and visit an NS Ticket Machine or another OV-chipkaart service point.

Are you returning earlier than planned? Is your internship abroad lasting longer than expected? Has your internship been cancelled? See the DUO website for what to do.

Frequently asked questions about studying or doing an internship abroad

Do I need to stop my studenten-OV if I go abroad to study temporarily?

Yes. You must stop your studenten-OV (Studentenreisproduct) before you go abroad for study or an internship. You can do this at an NS Ticket Machine or another OV-chipkaart service point.

Is my studenten-OV valid abroad?

No. Your studenten-OV (Studentenreisproduct) can only be used in the Netherlands. If you are going to study or do an internship abroad, apply for an OV-vergoeding from DUO. You will have the OV-vergoeding for abroad instead of your studenten-OV.

How much OV-vergoeding will I receive if I study abroad?

The OV-vergoeding for studying abroad changes each year. For more information, see the DUO website.

What should I do with my studenten-OV if I return from abroad earlier or later than planned?

  • If you return earlier than planned, your internship lasts longer than expected or your study or internship does not go ahead abroad, notify DUO as soon as possible.
  • Returning earlier? Report this via Mijn Duo. Do this in the month before you want to travel again with your Studentenreisproduct.
  • Is your internship being extended? Apply again to DUO for an OV-vergoeding covering the longer period.
  • Is your study or internship cancelled? Inform Mijn DUO as soon as possible that you want a weekly or weekend season ticket again instead of an OV-vergoeding. This applies even if you have not yet stopped your Studentenreisproduct.
