NS Flex season ticket

With an NS Flex season ticket, you can upgrade to 1st class up to fifteen minutes after you check in each day. See what applies to your season ticket.

How do you switch classes with NS Flex: Basis, Dal Voordeel, Weekend Voordeel, Altijd Voordeel?

You can switch your class in the NS app or Mijn NS:

Log in on Mijn NS
Switch to 1st class
Select the period for your switch: only today, indefinitely or until a specific date
Choose ‘Confirm’

If you prefer to travel in 2nd class again, you can reverse your class switch in the same place in the NS app or Mijn NS.

How to switch your NS Flex subscription: Dal Vrij, Weekend Vrij, Altijd Vrij, Traject Vrij?

Do you expect to travel frequently in 1st class in the coming period? You can switch classes for at least one month. Simply order one of our NS Flex freedom subscriptions for 1st class through Mijn NS. After one month, you can switch back to a 2nd class subscription.

Log in to Mijn NS
Go to ‘Products’
Select ‘Change subscription’
Choose your current subscription with the extra option ‘Standard 1st class travel’

Would you rather switch for one day or a few days? You can also upgrade to 1st class within 15 minutes after checking in via the NS app or Mijn NS.

Specify the period you want to switch for
Select ‘Confirm’

Please note: when travelling outside your freedom subscription, you travel by default in 2nd class without a discount. With NS Flex Traject Vrij, you receive 40% off in off-peak hours outside your fixed route, in the class of your subscription. For example, if you have NS Flex Traject Vrij 1st class, you also travel 1st class outside your route. If you have chosen an off-peak discount as an extra with your NS Flex Weekend Vrij subscription, you travel by default in 2nd class with 40% off in off-peak hours. You can choose to travel 1st class yourself.

Changing class when you change trains

If you are changing trains and want to travel 1st class only for the first or the second part of your journey, check out at the transfer station and then check in again. Set your class change in the NS app or Mijn NS before you start the 1st class part of your journey.

Costs for Class Changes with an NS Flex Subscription

Surcharges on weekdays and weekends with a discount subscription:
- Weekdays: when upgrading to 1st class, you pay the 2nd class fare that matches your subscription, plus an 80% surcharge on that 2nd class fare for travelling in 1st class.
- Weekends and public holidays: when upgrading to 1st class, you pay the 2nd class fare that matches your subscription, plus a 40% surcharge on that 2nd class fare for travelling in 1st class.
One month of 1st class travel with a free subscription: surcharge depends on the subscription
One day of 1st class travel with a free subscription: the extra cost varies by subscription. Please see page 16 of the NS Tarieven PDF.

Balance-based season ticket

If you have a balance-based season ticket, you buy a class change (Supplement) on the day you want to use it. Check which situation applies to your subscription.

How do you change your Student Travel Product?

Here is what applies to the Student Travel Product (student OV):

Go to an NS Ticket Machine
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader and select ‘Load other products’ on the screen
Click on ‘Toeslag 2 -1’
Choose the option you want
Follow the instructions to complete your payment
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader again

Your upgrade to 1st class is valid immediately, until 4.00 am.

How do you upgrade to Dal Voordeel using your balance?

On weekdays

Go to an NS Ticket Machine
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader
Select ‘Change class’ on the screen
Choose ‘1st class today’
Follow the instructions to complete payment
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader again

Your 1st class upgrade is valid immediately until 4.00 a.m.

At the weekend

Go to an NS Ticket Machine
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader
Select ‘Change class’ on the screen, then choose ‘Surcharge 2-1’
Then choose ‘Surcharge 2-1 weekend day’
Follow the instructions to complete payment
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader again

Your 1st class upgrade (Surcharge 2-1 weekend day) is valid immediately on the weekend day until 4.00 a.m.

How do you switch on Keuzedagen?

Travelling in 1st class on a Keuzedag costs €6. Add your Keuzedag to your OV-chipkaart before you switch class.

These steps apply to Keuzedagen:

Go to an NS Ticket Machine
Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader
On the screen, select ‘Change class Current: 2nd’
Choose the option ‘Surcharges 2-1’
Then click on ‘2-1 Surcharge Keuzedag’
Follow the instructions to complete the payment
Hold your OV-chipkaart to the card reader again

Your upgrade to 1st class is effective immediately and lasts until 4:00 a.m.

Voordeel season tickets

2-1 Weekend Day surcharge: travel all day in 1st class at the weekend for € 6.
Today 1st class: pay the fare for your journey. You will then pay the 1st class fare instead of the 2nd class fare.

Keuzedagen

Travel all day in 1st class on your Choice day for € 6.

No season ticket

You do not need an NS season ticket if you have a valid OV-chipkaart or OV-pas. You can still upgrade to 1st class.

How do you change class without a season ticket?

In Mijn NS

You can change class like this in Mijn NS (on the website or in our app):

Log in to Mijn NS.
Add your OV-chipkaart or OV-pas.
Switch to 1st class from the Mijn NS home screen.

If you prefer to travel 2nd class again, you can reverse the class change in the same place.

At the NS Ticket Machine

Go to the NS Ticket Machine.
Hold your OV-chipkaart or OV-pas against the card reader.
Select ‘Change class’ on the screen.
Choose either ‘Today 1st class’ or ‘Always travel 1st class’.

Valid immediately

Your upgrade to 1st class takes effect immediately and lasts until 4.00 a.m. When you check out, we automatically calculate the fare for your journey.

Costs without an NS season ticket

If you do not have an NS season ticket but hold a valid OV-chipkaart or OV-pas, you can upgrade to 1st class travel at the NS Ticket Machine or through Mijn NS.

The fare for your journey depends on your route. You can check the price for 1st and 2nd class travel in the Journey Planner. Make sure your OV-chipkaart or OV-pas has enough balance for 1st class travel.

NS-Business Card

You can also switch classes with an NS-Business Card. You can do this via the NS app, Mijn NS Zakelijk, or the NS Ticket Machine. It applies to one journey, the entire day, or for a fixed or unlimited period. The class switch is only valid on NS trains.

Please note that the class switch does not appear on check-in poles, gates or the Ticket Machine. The train conductor will be able to see it.

How do you change class with an NS-Business Card?

Using the NS app

You can change class either before or after you have checked in. You have up to fifteen minutes after checking in to do this.

Follow these simple steps to change class:

Open the NS app.
Select ‘More’ at the bottom right of your screen, then ‘Mijn NS’. If your NS-Business Card is not yet linked to the app, find out how to link your card.
Scroll down to find your current travel class, which you can change to 1st class.

The NS app also lets you cancel the class change or adjust it several times throughout the day.

Using Mijn NS Zakelijk

In Mijn NS Zakelijk, you can choose from three options: a class change for an indefinite period, a class change just for today, or for a specific date and time.

You can request a class change at any time, but make sure to arrange it before you check in.
