The OV-pas is the successor to the OV-chipkaart. Find out how it works.

What is the OV-pas?

The OV-pas is the successor to the OV-chipkaart: it is a single card that lets you use public transportation throughout the Netherlands.

Starting from 2026, the OV-pas will be replacing the OV-chipkaart everywhere. You will still be able to use your old OV-chipkaart at first.

Requesting an OV-pas

Do you have a season ticket from us? Then you will automatically receive a message in the course of 2026 to switch to the OV-pas. This means you do not need to order a separate OV-pas now.

Don't have an NS season ticket?

If you don't have an NS season ticket, you can order an OV-pas at ovpay.nl.

Already have an OV-pas?

If you already have an OV-pas, you can use it to travel with us. But only for 2nd class, full-fare travel.

How to travel with your OV-pas

Checking in and out is the same as it has always been:

Simply take your OV-pas from your wallet and check in.
Check out when you reach your final destination or when you transfer to another operator.

If you travel on balance, make sure your balance is at least € 20 before checking in.

Tracking costs

The gate or card reader will not show you your balance and fare when you check out. You can track your travel history and costs in the OVpay app or on Mijn NS.

Checking and topping up your balance

You can check or top up your balance in the OVpay app. Regrettably, our ticket machines do not offer this service yet, nor can conductors tell you your balance.

Frequently Asked Questions about the OV-pas

Can I use the Combined Travel Discount?

No, we do not yet offer this option. You cannot use the Combined Travel Discount with an OV-pas, nor can you give it to someone else.
I can't check in with my OV-pas.
There are two possible reasons.
1. Your OV-pas has been blocked for public transportation, for example because you do not have the required minimum balance. To fix this, see the answer to the question 'My OV-pas has been blocked for public transportation'.
2. Your OV-pas has been reported lost or stolen.
To find out more, check the display on the gate or card reader.
Can I use my OV-pas to pay for door-to-door services?

No, you cannot yet pay for these services with your OV-pas.

You can already use your OV-pas to park your bicycle in the bicycle parking facility, but you must pay the parking fees afterwards with your debit card.
