Mobility aids

If you travel with a wheelchair, mobility scooter or specialised bicycle, you can bring it along with you in the train, but it must meet certain requirements to ensure that it can be transported safely. Guide dogs may also travel for free in the train. The requirements are described below.

Good to know

There are a maximum number of places aboard the train for travellers using a mobility aid. It is therefore possible that you may have to take a train earlier or later, as your preferred train is full. That is also why we cannot offer group travel tickets.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters in the train

  • In order to fit on the train, in the lifts and on the wheelchair ramps, your wheelchair or mobility scooter may not be more than 150 centimeters long, 70 centimeters wide and 137.5 centimeters tall (including luggage).
  • The combined weight of you and your manual wheelchair may not exceed 200 kilogrammes if you require someone to push it. The combined weight of you and your electric wheelchair may not exceed 300 kilogrammes.
  • Mobility aids with an internal combustion engine are not permitted in the train for safety reasons.
  • You must be able to enter and exit the train with your electric wheelchair or mobility scooter via the access ramp.
  • Please keep in mind that you must be able to carry your own luggage.

Customised tricycle or walking cycle in the train

If your walking cycle or tricycle was provided via your health insurer due to a disability, then you may take it on the train with you without a special permit, and there are no peak-hour limitations. If you would like to utilise the mobile bridge to enter or exit the train, then your bicycle may not be more than 70 cm wide, including luggage.

Taking your electric bicycle, recumbent bicycle, tandem or Segway in the train.

If you use an e-bike, recumbent bicycle, tandem or Segway due to a disability, you can bring it along with you in the train for free without special permits all day long, including during peak hours. Since the conductor cannot tell the difference between an 'ordinary' bicycle/Segway and one for use with a disability, the following supplemental requirements apply:

  • you must attach a disabled sticker* in a visible location on your bicycle/Segway;
  • make sure you can show a valid document, such as a disabled parking card, WMO transport card (Regiotaxi), Valys card, or OV-Begeleiderskaart, etc., to prove that the bicycle/Segway is a necessary tool.

Your e-bike, recumbent bicycle, tandem or Segway may not exceed 150 cm in length, 70 cm in width, and 137.50 cm in height, including any luggage. You and your Segway together may not weigh more than 300 kilogrammes.

*A disabled sticker is widely available via the Internet and many retail outlets.

Traveling with a guide dog

Your service dog may accompany you on the train at no extra charge. It must be clearly identifiable as a service dog or service dog in training in order to be eligible for free travel, for example by displaying the logo of a guide dog organisation on its collar, coat or handle. No Dagkaart Hond is required to travel with a service dog.
