Alternative route advice for your transfer station

Sometimes you pay extra when you check out and in at the gates during your transfer. The system then calculates the exact route you travelled, rather than the shortest one. Below we explain why this happens and how you can avoid additional costs.

Why do you pay extra?

At certain stations, the system charges for the actual distance you travel. If you check out and in at the gates when changing trains, it may seem as though you took a longer route. This can result in you paying extra.

Passing through the gates when changing trains at these stations may lead to extra charges:

  • Almere Centrum
  • Alkmaar
  • Amsterdam Zuid
  • Amsterdam Sloterdijk
  • Amsterdam Muiderpoort
  • Hilversum

You cannot avoid these extra charges at Hilversum, Alkmaar, Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena and Amsterdam Muiderpoort. Do not worry, you can claim these costs back through our Customer Service.

How to avoid extra costs: alternative routes

You can avoid extra costs at Almere Centrum, Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam Sloterdijk by following the alternative routes. This means going around via the station hall or stairs instead of passing through the gates.
