Be among the first to travel with the OV-pas

Together with all transport providers in the Netherlands, we are developing the successor to the OV-chipkaart: the OV-pas. You will be one of the first to use it. Your help will let us test whether the switch from OV-chipkaart to OV-pas runs smoothly.

How the trial works

NS will send you several emails explaining how to switch to the OV-pas. The emails you receive depend on your subscription. Each one guides you step by step through what you need to do.

We ask you to follow these steps and share your feedback with us. This helps us improve the communication about the OV-pas. Your subscription stays the same; we just transfer it to your OV-pas.

This is what we expect from you

  • Review the emails and the letter with your OV-pas through the OV-café, our online community
  • Verify your address in Mijn NS
  • Make at least one journey by train with your OV-pas to check that everything works properly
  • Fill in a short online questionnaire

Good to know: you will continue using your OV-pas after the trial

After the trial, you will continue to travel with your OV-pas. You are among the first users as the OV-pas is still being developed. The following services are not yet available:

  • Co-travel discount
  • Renting a Dott bike
  • Parking a car on the street

Free travel until 25 October

As a thank you for participating, you can travel free with your OV-pas until 25 October. This applies to all services included in your Flex subscription: all journeys by train, metro, tram and bus, OV-fiets rental, bicycle storage, parking at Park and Ride (P+R), upgrading to 1st class, and the surcharge for Intercity direct.

You will receive a monthly invoice, but no amount will be debited from your account. Normal payment resumes from 25 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What does the trial involve exactly?

You will switch from your OV-chipkaart to the new OV-pas. Your subscription stays the same; we simply transfer it to your OV-pas. The trial helps us ensure the transition goes smoothly and that all communications are clear for you. We ask you to complete a few tasks via the OV-café, our online community. It’s an easy way to share your feedback.

How long does the trial last?

The trial lasts a few weeks. During this time, we ask you to do the following:

  • Review the emails you receive from NS
  • Check your address in Mijn NS
  • Order your OV-pas (only with Flex Basis; if you have Flex Dal Voordeel, the pass is sent to you automatically)
  • Review the letter included with your OV-pas
  • Make a journey by train to immediately check if your OV-pas works and your subscription transferred correctly
  • Complete a short online questionnaire

Once you have completed everything, your trial is finished. You can continue travelling with your OV-pas. Travel is free until 25 October.

Where can I go with questions during the trial?

If you have questions about the trial or your OV-pas, ask them in the OV-café. Experts who know everything about the OV-pas are ready to help you there. Should personal information be needed to resolve an issue, we will contact you directly.

Please note: NS Customer Service cannot assist you during the trial and until 25 October. Our staff do not yet have access to your OV-pas details.

What should I do with my OV-chipkaart?

You no longer need your OV-chipkaart once you start travelling with your OV-pas. We recommend keeping your OV-chipkaart until 25 October, just in case.

What do I pay for and what is free during the trial?

When you travel with your OV-pas, travel is free until 25 October. We offer this as a thank you for taking part. Free travel applies to all services included in your Flex subscription: all journeys by train, metro, tram and bus, OV-fiets rental, bicycle storage, parking at Park and Ride (P+R), upgrading to 1st class, and the surcharge for Intercity direct.

You will receive a monthly invoice so you can check everything is correct. However, no amount will be debited from your account until 25 October. There is nothing you need to do. From 26 October, you will pay as usual.
