Using the NS app as a traveller with reduced mobility

If you travel with reduced mobility, the NS app helps make your journey easier and more accessible. For example, the app shows which side you exit on, the facilities available at the station, and you can choose to view only accessible journeys.

Request NS Travel Assistance through the app

You can easily request NS Travel Assistance through the NS app. First, enter your details in your Mijn NS account.

You will provide:

  • Which assistive device(s) you use when travelling
  • Your emergency contact person
  • Whether you want to receive a booking confirmation
  • Whether to display NS Travel Assistance in the app

Once you have completed all fields, you can request NS Travel Assistance directly via the app.

Check which side to exit the train

At every arrival station, the NS app shows whether you exit on the left or right side (looking in the direction the train is travelling). This helps you get to the correct side of the platform on time.

You can also have this notification read aloud using your smartphone’s standard audio feature.

Instructions for iOS

  1. Plan your journey
  2. Tap ‘More’ in the bottom right corner
  3. Select ‘More information’
  4. The travel advice expands to show the exit side per station
  5. The app remembers this setting, so you only need to set it once

Instructions for Android

  1. Plan your journey
  2. Tap the arrow icon in the top right corner
  3. The travel advice expands and shows the exit side per station
  4. This setting is also saved
  5. You can also see this information in the Journey Planner

You can also find this information in the Journey Planner.

Check the station facilities

If you want to know what facilities are available at a station, you can find this under ‘Facilities’ or on the ‘Map’ in the NS app.

This includes shops, luggage lockers, toilets and water fountains, for example.

Here’s how to find this information:

  1. Select ‘Departure times’ at the bottom of the app
  2. Search for the station you want to check
  3. Tap ‘Facilities’ or ‘Map’ at the top

Add extra transfer time

When planning your journey, you can add extra transfer time under ‘Travel options’. This gives you more time to change trains calmly.

You can choose up to sixty minutes of additional transfer time.

Sliding step on the train

All our Sprinter and ICNG Intercity trains have a sliding step, making it easier for you to get on and off independently.

You can easily check whether your train has a sliding step in the NS app and the Journey Planner.

The easier you can manoeuvre with your assistive device, the more independent your travel usually is. If you can manage a small step height difference, boarding and alighting will often go smoothly.

If your device has small wheels, low footrests, or you have limited arm strength, we recommend requesting NS Travel Assistance.

Always use the door marked with the blue wheelchair symbol. It stays open longer to allow you to board calmly. The wheelchair space has room for a companion and is located near the wheelchair-accessible toilet.
