NS in the Province of South Holland

South Holland is the most densely populated region in the Netherlands. As a result, passenger numbers have increased significantly in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue. By 2040, we anticipate that the number of travellers will double, mainly due to the construction of 170,000 new homes close to the railway. All these new residents will need reliable door-to-door transport. That is why NS has ambitious plans for South Holland, covering trains, stations and transport connections.

Mobility and Urbanisation

Together with regional partners, we are working on the Mobility and Urbanisation development strategy (MoVe). This includes various projects such as the MIRT study of the Oude Lijn and new stations. We are also addressing the four major transport hubs in the region. We see many opportunities, for example by running trains more frequently, offering more sustainable public transport and improving station facilities.

From 2024, the new Intercity Next Generation (ICNG) will operate in the timetable. We are also rebuilding Rotterdam Alexander station completely in partnership with local and regional stakeholders. We encourage innovation in mobility and are evolving from a train company to a mobility company, delivering tailored solutions for South Holland.

More trains

The train remains important for many people to travel quickly and easily. That is why, from the 2024 timetable, a Sprinter will run every ten minutes between Dordrecht and Rotterdam. There will also be a train every ten minutes during peak hours from Monday to Thursday between Schiphol and Rotterdam. The connection between Leiden and Utrecht has been significantly improved. Busy routes like these require world-class stations. Together with partners, we also aim to enhance parking facilities, such as Park and Ride (P+R) and OV-fiets options.

Below you will find a selection of projects that we have carried out with various partners in South Holland—and that we will continue to develop in the coming years to help meet the challenges in this province.
