Children travel for free

Children aged 4 to 11 can travel unlimited and for free with Kids Vrij – even during peak hours. All they need is their own personal OV-chipkaart.

  • Make sure a supervisor aged 12 or older is always present
  • Valid on all NS trains and trains operated by other carriers
  • Children automatically receive a 34% discount on bus, tram and metro
  • Children also travel to Belgium and Germany for free (Note: the accompanying person needs an international ticket)

OV-chipkaart information

When you place your order, you can add Kids Vrij directly to your child's existing OV-chipkaart. If your child doesn't have a card yet, you can request a new OV-chipkaart free of charge.

Getting Kids Vrij is quick and easy:

  1. Click 'Apply now'.
  2. Log in to Mijn NS or create an account.
  3. Enter your own details first.
  4. In step 2, enter your child's details.
  5. Enter the OV-chipkaart number your child will use for travel.
  6. Proceed to payment to complete your Kids Vrij order.

If you would like to change an existing season ticket to Kids Vrij, you can only do so by cancelling the season ticket and then ordering Kids Vrij in the webshop. By placing an order, you agree to the terms and conditions.

NS Drawing Competition Finalists

The Kids Vrij campaign features dream train drawings created by the finalists of the NS Drawing Competition. These finalists were carefully selected by our official jury, including Jip van den Toorn and Master Jesper.

One dream train comes to life

Very soon, a truly unique train will be travelling across the Netherlands: one of these winning dream trains will be transformed into a full-size decorated train. You might even get to ride it!

Was your drawing not selected? We're still incredibly proud of every single entry. You can download a personal certificate from the NS Drawing Competition page as a special keepsake of your unique dream train.

  • Is Kids Vrij free?

    Children now temporarily receive a free personal OV-chipcard. This offer runs until 14 December 2026. If you apply for Kids Vrij during this period, your child can then travel with you for free as long as the subscription is active. The subscription ends automatically when your child turns 12.

  • Who is Kids Vrij for?

    Kids Vrij is for children aged 4 to 11. Good to know: children aged 0 to 3 always travel for free and do not need a subscription.

    The Kids Vrij subscription ends automatically when your child turns 12. After that, you can order a free NS Flex Dal Voordeel subscription for young people aged 12 to 17.
     

  • What is the delivery time for Kids Vrij?

    You can choose to request a free new OV-chipkaart. Within one week you will receive the OV-chipkaart at home, with the subscription already loaded. Your child can start travelling right away.

    Does your child already have their own OV-chipkaart? Enter this OV-chipkaart number when ordering Kids Vrij. You can then load the subscription onto the card at a ticket machine within 1 working day.
     

  • What is the difference between Railrunner and Kids Vrij?

    Railrunner
    Ready to use straight away. Buy a Railrunner as an e-ticket or load it onto an OV-chipkaart. Useful for a single train journey. Costs €2.50 per day.

    Kids Vrij
    With Kids Vrij, your child travels with you for free in the same class — even during peak hours. You will receive the personal OV-chipkaart (temporarily free) at home within one week. Extra benefit: on bus, tram and metro your child automatically receives a 34% discount.
     

  • Conditions Kids Vrij
    • NS retains the right to increase the price of the season ticket at any time. You will be informed of any price increases a few months in advance, at which time you will have the opportunity to cancel the season ticket if you wish.
    • The season ticket is initially available for the term of one year. After the first year, you can cancel the season ticket at any time with one month's notice.
    • If your child already has a personal OV-chipkaart, then you can simply download the season ticket to the card. You can also request a new OV-chipkaart free of charge.
    • When you order a Kids Vrij season ticket, you will be asked to make a small payment of € 0.01 to verify your personal and bank account information.
    • The season ticket is only valid when accompanied by a person aged 12 or older who is in possession of a valid ticket. 
    • The Kids Vrij season ticket is only for children aged 4 to 11.
    • The season ticket is valid in the same class indicated on the ticket held by the accompanying person.
    • Each accompanying person may accompany a maximum of three children aged 4 to 11 with their own personal OV-chipkaart.
    • Your child can also use the OV-chipkaart to travel by bus, tram or metro, as long as the card has a sufficient amount of balance. 
    • The season ticket is also valid for other rail carriers.
    • The season ticket is also valid on Dutch sections of routes served by the InterCity Berlin and ICE International. Note: your child need not purchase a supplement to travel aboard these trains, but the accompanying adult must purchase a supplement.
