Cancel your season ticket

You can cancel your season ticket after the first month. If you are not travelling for a while and want to avoid season ticket costs, you can switch to NS Flex Basis (€ 0 per month).

When can I cancel my season ticket?

You cannot cancel your season ticket within the first month. Once one month has passed from the start date, you can cancel at any time. For example, if your season ticket started on 17 May, you may cancel from 17 June.

Paying for your season ticket

How long you pay depends on when you cancel:

  • If you cancel before 12 noon, you pay up to the day you cancel. For instance, if you cancel before 12 noon on 17 June, you will not pay for 17 June (only up to 16 June).
  • If you cancel after 12 noon, you pay including the day you cancel. For example, cancelling after 12 noon on 17 June means you do not pay for 18 June (only up to 17 June).

Your season ticket will be invalid immediately. You will receive a refund by invoice for the unused period already paid for.

How do I cancel my season ticket?

We regret you are cancelling, but we are happy to assist.

Here is how to cancel your season ticket:

  1. Start cancelling and log in to your NS account.
  2. Select the season ticket you want to cancel.
  3. Read what happens after you cancel and confirm your cancellation.
  4. You have now cancelled your season ticket online.
  5. Go to an NS Ticket Machine to remove the season ticket from your card. Your cancellation will then be complete.

If you cannot or do not want to visit a Ticket Machine, NS Flex Basis will remain on your card with no season ticket charges.

My OV-chipkaart has expired. How do I cancel my season ticket?

The OV-chipkaart belongs to Translink, not NS; this organisation manages OV-chipkaarten for all public transport in the Netherlands. Your NS season ticket is on that card and must always be cancelled separately; even if your OV-chipkaart is blocked or expired.

OV-chipkaart expired less than one year ago

If you pay season ticket costs for your NS season ticket, Translink should have sent you a replacement card. Otherwise, you will receive a letter asking you to replace your OV-chipkaart yourself.

If you wish to get a replacement card:

  1. Request your replacement card at OV-chipkaart.nl. Your old card will be blocked automatically, and Translink will refund your balance within 15 days. The replacement card costs €7.50.
  2. Wait two days. During this time, Translink will send information about your replacement OV-chipkaart to our system.
  3. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl using the card number of your replacement OV-chipkaart.

If you do not want a replacement card:

  1. Block your expired or new card at OV-chipkaart.nl. This ensures no one can travel with it.
  2. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl using the card number of your blocked OV-chipkaart.
  3. Your season ticket will be cancelled immediately.

OV-chipkaart expired more than one year ago or you have blocked the card yourself

Your card is no longer valid and cannot be used for travel.

  1. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl using the card number of your old OV-chipkaart.
  2. Your season ticket will be cancelled immediately.

I am unsure how long my OV-chipkaart has been expired

Your OV-chipkaart displays its expiry date.

Have you lost your card? Block your card at OV-chipkaart.nl. The card will no longer be valid and no one can travel with it anymore. Remember, you still need to cancel your NS season ticket yourself:

  1. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl using your blocked OV-chipkaart’s card number.
  2. Your season ticket will be cancelled immediately.

Other questions about cancelling your season ticket

I cannot or do not want to visit the NS Ticket Machine. Can I still cancel my season ticket?

Once you cancel online, NS Flex Basis will remain on your OV-chipkaart. This has no season ticket cost. If you prefer otherwise, ask someone to remove it for you at an NS Ticket Machine or an OV-chipkaart Service Point nearby.

I am not the contract holder of my season ticket. Can I cancel it?

Only the contract holder, who is responsible for paying the invoices, can cancel the season ticket. They need to log in using the NS account to cancel online.

How do I cancel a season ticket for someone who has passed away?

You can only cancel the season ticket online if you have the login details for the NS account linked to it. If you do not have these, please contact our Customer Service. We will be happy to assist you.
