Altijd Vrij Monthly Ticket

If you travel frequently by train to different destinations within the Netherlands but prefer not to have a subscription, consider the Altijd Vrij Monthly Ticket (Maandkaart Altijd Vrij). It is available with a validity of one or three months and can be bought at NS Ticket Machines. You can also easily link the pass to your personal OV-chipkaart.

Altijd Vrij Monthly Ticket for public transport

The Altijd Vrij Monthly Ticket is valid throughout the Netherlands on both NS trains and other rail operators, excluding Nightjet and Eurostar. Travel on Intercity Direct or ICE International requires an additional surcharge.

The price of the Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass (Maandkaart Altijd Vrij) depends on the selected validity period and class. You can buy the pass at the NS Ticket Machine at the station. Remember to bring your personal OV-chipkaart. These are the prices:

Which class may I travel in?

You can select the class you want to use for your monthly pass when purchasing it.

How long can I travel with the Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass?

You can travel unlimitedly throughout the month, including peak hours, off-peak times, weekends and public holidays.

What is the difference between a monthly pass and an NS Flex subscription?

You purchase a monthly pass for a fixed period after which it expires. You pay the full amount upfront at the NS Ticket Machine. This means no credit check is necessary.

NS Flex subscriptions are ongoing, adjustable each month, and give you the option to pay afterwards (on account). A monthly pass does not offer this flexibility. NS Flex subscriptions are often cheaper.

Where can I buy the Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass?

You can only buy the Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass at NS Ticket Machines located at the stations.

How do I buy an Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass?
  1. Visit the NS Ticket Machine at any NS station
  2. Hold your personal OV-chipkaart up to the card reader
  3. Select 'Monthly Passes'
  4. Choose the Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass for one or three months
  5. Select your preferred class
  6. Make your payment
  7. Your monthly pass is valid immediately. Have a good journey!

Yes, you must check in and out with your personal OV-chipkaart every time you travel using your Altijd Vrij Monthly Pass or Traject Vrij.
