Blocked OV-chipkaart

Your OV-chipkaart has been blocked – what now? There can be several reasons for a blocked OV-chipkaart. Below you can read what these reasons are and how to remove the block.

Negative balance

There is not enough balance on your OV-chipkaart. You can no longer check in and you cannot travel using a season ticket either.

Top up your balance to at least € 20 (€ 10 if you have a season ticket) and you can continue your journey.

Missed check-out

You have missed check-out a few times. After twelve instances your card is blocked. You can have this temporary block removed at the NS Tickets & Service shop / OV Service & Tickets shop of the carrier where you last checked in.

Unpaid direct debits

You have an outstanding payment because of failed direct debits for ‘automatic top-up’. On www.ov-chipkaart.nl you can read how to pay the outstanding amount and lift the block.
