What compensation does NS offer?

We're here for you, even after a stroke of bad luck. Here is a list of different types of compensation we offer if your journey is delayed or disrupted.

The following is based on the Concession for the main rail network 2025–2033, the NS conditions of carriage (AVR-NS), the Money Back in Case of Delay conditions for travel with NS and relevant laws and regulations (including the Passenger Transport Act 2000 and the European Passengers’ Rights Regulation).

What compensation and assistance do we offer?

  • Compensation for delay. If your journey is delayed by at least 30 minutes*, we offer compensation for the delay. NS may invoke force majeure to deny compensation. Examples of such circumstances include a nationwide power failure, threats of terrorist attacks, exceptional weather conditions and major natural disasters.
  • Refund of ticket. If a delay of 60 minutes or more is expected, we offer a refund of your ticket, provided you have not claimed compensation for the delay.
  • Replacement transport. In the event of major disruptions (that is, prolonged disruptions that make travel by train impossible on an NS route) we will provide replacement transport if this is reasonably possible. NS decides which replacement transport to deploy. NS does not reimburse costs that travellers incur on their own initiative to travel with other carriers or for alternative transport such as taxis.
  • Drinks, food and overnight accommodation. For significant delays we will offer drinks and food depending on the circumstances and objective necessity. If necessary and physically possible, we will offer you a bed.

* If you travel on the Intercity direct, you are entitled to compensation for delays from 15 minutes. The amounts for that compensation differ from the overview below. See the compensation table for details.

What applies to my ticket and situation?

The list below explains your options in specific situations, what we offer and how to arrange it. The described situations concern your journey with NS. References to the train mean an NS train. Terms and conditions apply at all times, such as the NS conditions of carriage (the AVR-NS), the conditions of the Money Back in Case of Delay for travel with NS scheme and those of the European Passengers’ Rights Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2021/782).

Replacement transport

If there is a disruption, we recommend taking the next train if that is possible. If no trains will run on your route for the foreseeable future, we recommend travelling via NS where possible. Use the Journey Planner in the NS app or on NS.nl to find the fastest way to reach your destination.

If you cannot travel via NS, we will provide alternative transport where possible. We will normally prioritise bus services as the first alternative to the train. NS depends on the availability of buses and bus drivers for this. Shortages of buses and/or drivers can unfortunately occur. In larger cities we consider using other regular modes of transport, such as the metro. NS will advise on the disruption page (current situation on the network) if you should travel with another carrier. For the latest travel advice click the “Disruptions and engineering work” link in the Journey Planner in the NS app or on NS.nl.

Replacement bus service

You are stranded. Continuing your journey or taking an alternative route by train is not possible. It is unclear how long this will last.

What we provide and how to arrange it

We arrange replacement bus transport. We aim to have replacement buses on the road within 60 minutes. This depends on the availability of enough buses and bus drivers and on how many travellers are affected by the disruption. You do not need to do anything yourself. We will let you know (through the Journey Planner in the NS app and on NS.nl) whether we can deploy buses and from where they will depart.

What else do we offer?

Alternative routes

NS decides which replacement transport will be used. NS does not reimburse costs that travellers incur on their own initiative to travel with other carriers or for alternative transport such as taxis. We will only reimburse such costs if we have advised you to travel with those carrier(s). We will publish this advice on the disruption page (“Disruptions and engineering work” in the Journey Planner in the NS app or on NS.nl). Please note that the Journey Planner always suggests the fastest route, even if that is, for example, by bicycle, and this does not necessarily reflect the route NS recommends during a disruption.

Alternative transport

Regarding costs for alternative transport, we may in exceptional circumstances and as a gesture of goodwill explicitly allow stranded travellers to arrange alternative transport, such as taxis, and claim the costs (in full or in part) from NS. We will announce this on NS.nl. It may also happen that we arrange a taxi for you during a disruption if your specific situation at that moment is exceptional. In those cases we will organise the taxi for you.

Information within 100 minutes

We do everything we can to provide information as quickly as possible about alternative travel options when your scheduled train is severely delayed or cancelled. If we cannot provide you, through the usual NS information channels, with travel information within 100 minutes of the scheduled departure time of your delayed/cancelled train, you may use other public transport yourself (train and bus only; not a taxi, rental car or private car). If this results in higher travel costs than you would have incurred travelling on your planned NS route, NS will reimburse those additional costs provided they are necessary, appropriate and reasonable for the alternative route.

Assistance (food, drinks and hotel stay)

For significant delays, NS will offer drinks and meals depending on the circumstances and objective necessity. If necessary and physically possible, we will offer you a bed. If you booked a hotel with the permission of an NS employee, you can claim this back using this reimbursement form.

Travel via another carrier

You are stranded. Continuing your journey or diverting by train is not possible. It is unclear how long this will last.

What we offer and how to arrange it

In certain situations we make arrangements with another carrier to allow NS travellers to divert free of charge. You do not need to do anything yourself. If this applies, we will advise it in the diversion guidance on the disruptions page. You can find this guidance on the disruptions page on NS.nl and in the NS app under “Storingen en werkzaamheden” (note: this is not the general Journey Planner on NS.nl and in the NS app).

Important to know: if you decide to travel with another carrier without a diversion advisory from NS, those costs are at your own expense

Alternative transport, such as a taxi

You are stranded. Continuing your journey or diverting by train is not possible. It is unclear how long this will last.

What we offer and how to arrange it

In exceptional (individual) cases we may decide to provide a taxi as alternative transport. In that case we will arrange the taxi for you. Please contact an NS employee at the station or our Customer Service (for example via the Service & Alarmzuil on the platform) to ask whether this applies in your specific situation. If you have our explicit permission to arrange alternative transport yourself, such as a taxi, you may claim those costs (with proof of payment). You can do this using our reimbursement form or by contacting our Customer Service.

Important to know: we do not reimburse taxi costs you incur on your own initiative unless NS has exceptionally and explicitly agreed to reimburse replacement transport costs such as taxis (in full or in part). You must be able to show that permission, or it must be evident from the registration with our Customer Service.

No information about available options within 100 minutes

The expectation is that you will arrive at your destination station with a delay of 60 minutes or more and NS did not inform you, within 100 minutes of the planned departure time of the delayed or cancelled train or the missed last connection, about the available options for travel via an alternative route (for example via the Journey Planner or an announcement).

Note: this concerns being informed within 100 minutes. The bus or train NS recommends may depart, for example, 120 minutes after your originally planned departure time.

What we offer and how to arrange it

We will reimburse reasonable, necessary and appropriate costs you incur for alternative public transport (rail, coach or bus) if you were not informed within 100 minutes of the planned departure time about available options to travel via another route. You can arrange this by claiming the costs you incurred (with proof of payment). Please contact our Customer Service for this.

Destination unreachable due to delay, disruption or large-scale failure

  • Because a train is delayed you can no longer reach your destination station on the same NS day, as the last train on your route is no longer running.
We will provide replacement transport so that you can still reach the destination station. NS decides which replacement transport is used. If we are unable to arrange replacement transport, for example because the destination is no longer reachable, we will arrange a hotel or other accommodation for you where and when this is physically possible. Report to an NS employee at the station or to our Customer Service (for example via the Service & Alarmzuil on the platform). If our Customer Service has given you explicit permission to arrange an overnight stay yourself, you may claim those costs (with proof of payment). You can request reimbursement via this form.

Important to know: NS always decides how an overnight stay is arranged. We do not reimburse hotel costs you incur on your own initiative unless NS has explicitly promised you personally to reimburse these costs (in full or in part). You must be able to demonstrate that permission or it must be evident from the registration with our Customer Service.

  • The last train on your journey is delayed, so you can no longer reach your final destination on the same NS day using the regular onward public transport from your destination station.
We will provide replacement transport so that you can still reach your final destination. NS decides which replacement transport is used. If we cannot arrange replacement transport, for example because the final destination is no longer reachable, we will arrange a hotel or other accommodation for you where and when this is physically possible.

  • NS is unable to provide replacement transport, for example due to a large-scale failure of trains, or when your final destination is reasonably no longer reachable (for example because roads are closed or when travelling to a Wadden Island), making one or more overnight stays necessary.
We will arrange a hotel or other accommodation for you where and when this is physically possible. Report to an NS employee at the station or to our Customer Service (for example via the Service & Alarmzuil on the platform). If our Customer Service has given you explicit permission to arrange an overnight stay yourself, you may claim those costs (with proof of payment). You can request reimbursement via this form.

I cannot reach NS to arrange (permission for) alternative transport

In the rare case that you cannot reach us by any channel after several attempts, you may arrange alternative transport yourself (for example a taxi) and claim reimbursement for reasonable costs via this form. This only applies if you are stranded at the end of the day and would otherwise be unable to get home (or to another final destination) that same day because an NS train failed or was delayed. Make sure you can show evidence that contacting us really was impossible. You must also be able to show the receipt or invoice if we ask for it.

We do everything we can to be available day and night to help you in these situations, for example via the Service & Alarmzuil on every platform and by phone (030-7515155).
