24 hours of art and culture in Venlo

With its gentle, melodious language and location on the border with Germany, being in Venlo can sometimes feel like being abroad. Yet it is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Visit the museum quarter, marvel at the theatre and enjoy a cultural day out in Venlo. The North Limburg town is big on history but small on size. You can easily walk from Venlo station to all the cultural highlights in the city centre.

10:00 am: Breakfast in a historic setting at De Graanbeurs

Your North Limburg culture day begins at the 'hukske van de merret'. Before you dive into the museum in Venlo, have breakfast at a historic site from the city's illustrious history. De Graanbeurs was bombed during World War II and rebuilt in 1950s historic style. Through the French doors, you can look out onto the stately 1597 City Hall of Venlo on the market square, while you can see the municipal monument Vleesstraat from the main entrance. Enjoy a coffee with croissant or authentic Limburg rustic bread with kerboet and immerse yourself in the history of one of our country's oldest cities.

De Graanbeurs is an 8-minute walk from Venlo train station.

  • Tuesday to Sunday open for breakfast from 09:00
  • Breakfast here costs +/- €9.50 p.p.

11:00: Admire modern art at Museum van Bommel van Dam

You'll find the museum quarter right opposite Venlo station. Your first stop is in the old 1938 post office: MVBVD. A strange name for a museum? Either way, it's brimming with modern contemporary art and design. Besides exhibitions on well-known, national and international artists, the museum also offers a stage to local artists. Architecturally, the museum is interesting as well, with a real eye-catcher on the roof: 'the diving glasses'. From here you have a wonderful view of the old town. Tip: extend your visit to the Venlo museum quarter with a visit to the adjacent Limburgs Museum.

MVBVD is a 2-minute walk from Venlo station and 6 minutes from your breakfast spot.

  • Adult admission €12.50, children and Museumkaart free. Combiticket with adjacent Limburgs Museum: € 21
  • Open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00-17:00
