Bring your own cup
Every day, tens of thousands of disposable cups are used at stations. This can be made more sustainable. That is why NS encourages travellers to bring their own reusable cup. This helps reduce waste and makes it easier for you to make conscious choices on the go.
Tip: bring a cup no taller than 13 centimetres, so it fits under all machines at the station.
Less waste, more reuse
Around 80,000 disposable cups are used daily at Dutch stations. By bringing a reusable cup, you help reduce this number. According to Milieu Centraal, a reusable cup provides environmental benefits after about 25 to 60 uses on average, depending on the material. The more you use your cup, the greater the impact.
If you bring your own cup to a station shop, you will receive a €0.25 discount on a hot drink at many outlets. This makes sustainable behaviour immediately rewarding.
The discount is valid at various station shops, including:
- Kiosk
- Julia’s
- Stationshuiskamers
- Other participating station shops
The discount only applies if you bring your own cup and it is suitable for hot drinks.
What kind of cup is best?
Not every cup fits under the coffee machine, so it’s helpful to keep the following in mind:
- The cup should be no taller than 13 cm to fit under all machines at the station.
- The cup should be clean and suitable for hot drinks.
- A sealable cup is convenient for travelling.
If you do not have one yet, reusable cups are available for purchase at many stations.
Working together towards circular stations
Bringing your own cup fits within NS’s broader ambition to make stations more circular and sustainable. We do this by:
- Reducing disposable packaging
- Offering more reusable alternatives
- Making conscious choices for sustainable products and suppliers
Small steps like bringing your own cup help us make a big difference together.
