Paying and appealing fines

You may be fined on the train or at the station for offences such as travelling without a valid ticket. Find out how to pay the fine or lodge an appeal.

How do you pay a fine?

Do you have an NS Flex subscription or NS-Business Card? You will then pay the fine through your next invoice.

If this does not apply, you have two options: pay immediately on the train or pay later.

Pay the fine immediately

If you pay your fine straight away on the train, the amount is reduced from €70 to €50 (in addition to the fare for your ticket). You can pay the head train conductor by card or cash.

If you choose to pay immediately, you cannot file an objection afterwards.

Pay the fine later

If you receive a fine and do not pay it on the train, you will get a payment extension. You will receive a letter by post explaining how to pay the fine within 14 days. Please include the correct payment reference when transferring the amount.

If you do not pay within 14 days, we will send you a single reminder. This adds €20 administrative costs to your fine.

If payment is not made in the following 14 days, we will hand your case over to a collection agency. This adds €25 collection costs to your fine.

If payment is not made on time, your case may be referred to the Central Judicial Collection Agency or the Public Prosecution Service. They will contact you about the next steps in the legal process.

Objecting to your fine

If you have paid, submit an objection via NS Customer Service. If your objection is valid, we will cancel the fine and refund the amount already paid to your account.

ID requirement

There is an ID requirement in the Netherlands, so you must always be able to show valid identification. Valid forms of ID come in various types, such as a passport, identity card, or driving licence.

An NS train conductor is an official authorised to ask for your ID.

The ID requirement in public transport applies from the age of 12 if you travel without a valid ticket or obstruct ticket inspection. For other violations, the ID requirement applies from age 14.

Frequently travelling without a valid ticket

Do you often receive fines for travelling without a valid ticket? You could then face a travel ban, preventing you from travelling by train for several months.

If you travel during this ban, you commit a criminal offence. In such cases, we will involve the police.
