House rules on the train

Our trains have house rules to ensure a safe, clean and comfortable journey. Following these rules helps to create a pleasant travel experience for everyone. Our staff and information screens on the train remind travellers of these rules. Additional rules also apply, which you can read about here on this page.

The rules

Seats are for travellers

Hand luggage must not occupy a seat that another traveller could use. This helps us all to travel comfortably and ensures seats remain available for other travellers.

When the whistle sounds, boarding is no longer possible

Once the whistle sounds for your train, you may not board. This rule protects your safety and that of others. Doors often close slightly before the scheduled departure time so the train can leave on time.

Travel in the correct class

If you hold a 2nd class ticket you must travel in the 2nd class. You may not sit in 1st class with a 2nd class ticket unless the train conductor says it is permitted.

Smoking is prohibited

Smoking is not allowed on the train. This also applies to e-cigarettes and similar products.

No feet on the seats

We all want a clean train. Please do not put your feet on the seats and dispose of rubbish in the bin.

Identification is required

If you break a rule or travel with a personal or age-related ticket, you must be able to identify yourself with a valid form of ID.

Use emergency equipment only in an emergency

Use the emergency brake only in genuine emergencies. Misuse may result in a fine of € 125 each time and compensation for any damage caused.

If you would like to read the house rules for Sprinter and Intercity at your leisure, consult the overview in the PDF.

Take your bike on the train

You may take your bike on the train. Specific rules apply, such as parking your bike in a designated area and having a Fietskaart Dal.
