House rules on the train

Our trains have house rules to ensure a safe, clean and comfortable journey. Following these rules helps to create a pleasant travel experience for everyone. Our staff and information screens on the train remind travellers of these rules. Additional rules also apply, which you can read about here on this page.

The rules

The whistle means boarding is no longer allowed

Once the whistle sounds for your train, boarding is no longer permitted. This ensures your safety and that of others. The doors often close a little before the scheduled departure time to allow the train to leave on time.

Travel in the correct class

With a 2nd class ticket, you must travel in 2nd class. You may not sit in 1st class with a 2nd class ticket unless a train conductor allows it.

Smoking is prohibited

Smoking is not permitted on the train. This also applies to e-cigarettes and similar products.

No feet on the seats

Everyone wants a clean train. Please do not put your feet on the seats and dispose of rubbish in the bin.

Identification is required

If you break a rule or travel with a personal or age-related ticket, you must be able to present valid identification.

Use emergency facilities only in emergencies

Only use the emergency brake in genuine emergencies. Misuse may result in a fine of € 125 per occasion and compensation for damages caused.

If you want to review the house rules for Sprinter and Intercity trains calmly, please see the PDF overview.

Take your bike on the train

You may take your bike on the train. Specific rules apply, such as parking your bike in a designated area and having a Fietskaart Dal.
