Taking aids on the train

Are you travelling with awheelchair, mobility scooter or an adaptedbicycle? Your aid is allowed on the train. A few conditions apply, to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for both you and your aid. A trained assistance dog may also travel free of charge, subject to certain conditions.

Wheelchair or mobility scooter on the train

We are happy to help you travel as safely and comfortably as possible with your mobility aid. That is why there are rules regarding size and weight:

  • A maximum of 150 cm long, 70 cm wide and 137.5 cm high (including you and your luggage)
  • A maximum of 200 kilos if someone else needs to push your mobility aid (including you)
  • A maximum of 300 kilos if your mobility aid moves independently (including you)

You must be able to drive your electric wheelchair or mobility scooter on and off the train yourself and carry your own luggage. Combustion engines are not permitted on the train.

There are a limited number of spaces for travellers with mobility aids. Occasionally, this means you will need to take an earlier or later train.

Adapted tricycle or balance bike on the train

If you have an adapted balance bike or tricycle, you may take it on board free of charge, even during peak hours. If you want to use a mobile ramp or bridge, your bike must not be wider than 70 cm, including your luggage.

(Electric) bicycle, recumbent bike, tandem or Segway as an aid

If you use an (electric) bicycle, recumbent bike, tandem or Segway as an aid due to a disability, you may take it with you free of charge all day, including during peak times. Please note the following:

  • Display a disabled sticker on your bicycle or Segway in a visible place. You can order this free of charge online or buy it at various shops.
  • Present a document showing that your aid is necessary, such as a disabled parking permit, WMO transport pass (Regiotaxi), Valys pass, or OV Companion pass.
  • If you wish to use the movable bridge, request assistance in advance. Your bicycle must not be wider than 70 cm (including luggage). You and your aid may weigh no more than 300 kilos together.

Travelling with an assistance dog

If your assistance dog wears a harness, coat or collar with the logo of a designated assistance dog organisation, they may travel with you on the train free of charge, even if they are still in training. There is no need to buy a Dog Day ticket.
