Domestic high-speed line (HSL)

The Intercity Direct runs on the domestic high-speed line between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Breda. The Intercity Den Haag–Eindhoven also partially uses the HSL. These trains are popular, but there is room for improvement in their reliability and punctuality.

Improved performance on the HSL

NS and ProRail work closely together to reduce cancellations on the Intercity Direct, Intercity Den Haag–Eindhoven and Intercity Brussels. Two improvement teams continuously monitor performance and take additional measures when necessary.

Results and challenges

An independent agency evaluated the improvement programme in 2016 and again in 2017. Their conclusion was clear: the approach is effective. Cancellations have noticeably decreased. The HSL remains challenging due to the complex infrastructure, which combines conventional tracks, varying power systems and different signalling systems. As a result, cancellations on the HSL (5–7%) are higher than on regular tracks (2%).

NS considers this level of cancellations too high. Fundamental changes to the infrastructure are still necessary to further improve performance.

Additional measures

NS and ProRail focus on:

  • Better rolling stock management
  • More efficient logistics and traffic control
  • Strengthening maintenance and emergency response teams
  • Faster follow-up in case of disruptions

We monitor performance together daily to ensure we meet the agreements with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
