Travelling abroad for your studies

Would you like to do an internship abroad? Or are you attending classes at a foreign university? If so, then your student travel product isn't much help.

Studying abroad

Before you leave the country, take a moment to find out what you need to do to deactivate your student travel product, because it will not be done automatically for you!

Public transport compensation instead of a student travel product

If you will be studying abroad temporarily, you are entitled to request compensation for public transport costs via DUO. This compensation then takes the place of your student travel product. If you do not request public transport compensation, then your student travel product will remain active.

Deactivating your student travel product

Before your public transport compensation goes into effect, you are required to deactivate your student travel product. You can arrange that at any NS Ticket Machine or OV-chipkaart service point.

This video explains how to deactivate your student travel product.

Returning to the Netherlands

When you return to the Netherlands after studying abroad, you can continue using your student travel product. But remember to request it from DUO in time, after which you can download it to your OV-chipkaart at any NS Ticket Machine or OV-chipkaart service point.

Study abroad extended, shortened or cancelled?

If you return earlier than planned, or if your study abroad is extended longer than expected, or is cancelled entirely, make sure to visit the DUO website to find out what to do with your student travel product.
