Cancelling a season ticket

You can cancel your season ticket after the first month. Are you temporarily not traveling and do you not want subscription costs? You can also change your season ticket to NS Flex Basis (€ 0 per month).


When can I cancel my season ticket?

You cannot cancel your season ticket within the first month. You can cancel again one month after your subscription begins, at any time. For example, if your subscription started on 17 May, you can cancel starting 17 June.

Paying for your season ticket

The payment deadline for your season ticket depends on the time of cancellation:

  • Cancelling before 12 noon: you pay until the day you cancel. For example: You cancel before 12 noon on 17 June: you will no longer pay for your season ticket on 17 June (but until 16 June inclusive)
  • Cancelling after 12 noon: you pay until the day you cancel inclusive. For example: You cancel after 12 noon on 17 June. You will no longer pay for your season ticket on 18 June (but until 17 June inclusive).

Your subscription is always immediately not valid anymore. You will receive a refund for the remainder of the subscription period you have already paid, via invoice.

How do I cancel my season ticket?

You can't cancel your season ticket within the first month. However, you can cancel it again one month after your season ticket begins. For example: if your subscription started on 17 May, you can change it again starting 17 June.

This is how you cancel your season ticket:

  1. Start cancelling and log in with your NS account.
  2. Choose the season ticket you want to cancel.
  3. Read what happens after your cancellation and confirm your cancellation.
  4. You have now cancelled your paid season ticket online.
  5. Go to the NS ticket machine to remove the season ticket from your card. Your cancellation is then complete.

If you can't or don't want to go to the ticket machine, you will have NS Flex Basis on your card. You won't pay any subscription costs for that.

My OV-chipkaart has expired. How can I cancel?

The OV-chipkaart isn't issued by NS, but by Translink, an organization that produces the OV-chipkaart for all public transport services in the Netherlands. Your NS season ticket is ón the card and must always be cancelled separately, even if your OV-chipkaart has been blocked or expired.

See which situation applies to you:

  • OV-chipkaart has expired for less than 1 year

    Do you pay subscription costs for your NS season ticket? Then you should have received a new card from Translink. Otherwise, you'll receive a letter asking you to replace your OV-chipkaart yourself.

    What to do if you want a replacement card:

    1. Request your replacement card at OV-chipkaart.nl. Your old card will be automatically blocked, and Translink will refund your balance to your account within 15 days. The new card costs € 7.50.
    2. Wait 2 days. During this time, Translink will send the information about your replacement OV-chipkaart to our system.
    3. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl. You'll use the card number from your replacement OV-chipkaart.
    4. Go to the NS ticket machine to remove your season ticket from your replacement card.

    What to do if you don't want a card:

    1. Block your expired or new card at OV-chipkaart.nl. This way, no one can travel with it anymore.
    2. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl. You use the card number from your blocked OV chip card.
    3. The subscription is canceled immediately.
  • Your OV-chipkaart has expired for more than 1 year or you have blocked the card yourself

    Your card is no longer valid and you can no longer travel with it.

    1. Cancel your subscription via ns.nl. You will use the card number from your old OV-chipkaart.
    2. The subscription is cancelled immediately.
  • I don't know how long my OV-chipkaart has expired

    Your OV-chipkaart shows the expiration date.

    Lost your card? Block it at OV-chipkaart.nl. Your OV-chipkaart will then no longer be valid and no one will be able to travel with it. You still need to cancel your NS season ticket yourself:

    1. Cancel your season ticket via ns.nl. You'll use the card number from your blocked OV-chipkaart.
    2. The season ticket is canceled immediately.

Other questions about cancelling your season ticket

  • I can't or don't want to go to the ticket machine. Can I cancel my season ticket?

    After your cancellation, you will keep NS Flex Basis on your OV-chipkaart. You will not pay any subscription costs for this. Don't you want that? Then ask someone else to remove it from the card at an NS ticket machine or OV-chipkaart service point nearby.

  • I am not the contract holder of my season ticket. Can I cancel?

    Only the contract holder - that is the one who pays the invoices - can cancel the season ticket. That person logs in with the NS account to cancel online.

  • How do I cancel a season ticket of someone who has passed away?

    You can only cancel the season ticket online if you have the login details of the NS account to which the season ticket is linked. If you do not have these, please contact our Customer Service. We will be happy to help you.
