Paying with your OV-pas

  • Where can I go with my OV-pas?

    You can use your OV-pas for all public transportation in the Netherlands, including the bus, tram and underground. You can even take ICE or IC Direct train services, provided you purchase the supplement.

    With an OV-pas, you travel in 2nd class and pay the full fare.

  • Can I use my OV-pas to travel with a season ticket?

    No, we do not offer this option. For now, the OV-pas only supports 2nd class, full-fare travel. If you have a season ticket or want to apply a discount, please use your OV-chipkaart. 

  • What is the minimum balance I need on my OV-pas?

    The minimum balance for travelling on balance is EUR 20. You can view or top up your balance in the OVpay app.

  • Can I change my travel class?

    Yes, you can. You can change classes via My NS or the ticket machine.

  • Can I use the Combined Travel Discount?

    No, we do not yet offer this option. You cannot use the Combined Travel Discount with an OV-pas, nor can you give it to someone else.

  • How is my privacy protected?

    Privacy is a paramount concern of NS. Read our privacy statement for more information.

  • Can I pair my OV-pas with my Mijn NS account?

    Yes, you can pair your OV-pas with Mijn NS. After pairing, you'll be able to track your travel history and costs.

  • I have a question or complaint about travelling with the OV-pas

    If you have a question or complaint about your trip,
    please reach out to the operator. In other words, if you travelled with NS, contact the NS customer service.

  • Can I use my OV-pas to pay for door-to-door services?

    No, we do not yet offer this option. You need an OV-chipkaart to use our door-to-door services, such as OV-fiets, P+R or bicycle storage.

  • How do I view my travel and payment history

    Get clarity on fares by pairing your OV-pas with your account in Mijn NS. After pairing, you'll be able to track your travel history and costs.

    Or view your travel and payment history in the OVpay app. Visit ovpay.nl to download the app and pair your OV-pas. 

  • Can I get a refund if my trip is delayed?

    Yes, you can. Visit Refunds for Delayed Journeys to find out how.

  • How to pay for train travel with your OV-pas

    If you travel on balance,
    the fare will be deducted from your OV-pas balance. You will pay the full 2nd class fare.

    If you travel on account,
    you will be billed monthly. 

  • How to check your OV-pas balance

    You can check your balance on the ticket machine or in the OVpay app. Visit  ovpay.nl  to download the app and pair your OV-pas. The conductor can also tell you your balance.

  • How to top up your OV-pas

    You can top up your OV-pas using the OVpay app. Regrettably, our ticket machines do not offer this service.

  • How to correct a missed check-in or check-out

    If you travel on balance,
    you will be charged EUR 20 for a missed check-in or check-out. After you correct the missed check-in or check-out, the overpaid amount will be refunded to your account within a couple of days. 

    1. Open the OVpay app at least 6 days after the trip in question 
    2. and locate the trip.
    3. If you missed a check-out, enter the station at which you would have wanted to check out. If you missed a check-in, copy your check-out station. 

    If you travel on account,
    you can correct your missed check-out in the OVpay app 6 hours after the trip in question.

     

Problems on the way

  • I overpaid for my trip.

    If you suspect that you overpaid for your trip, check the following:

    • All your trips with public transportation are aggregated and billed together. Go to Mijn NS or use the OVpay app to verify the fares you were charged. With an OV-pas, you travel in 2nd class and pay the full fare.
    • Check whether you didn't accidentally miss a check-in or check-out. If you do, we will charge you € 20.

    If you are sure you overpaid,
    please contact our Customer Service. We recommend reaching out via the chat, as it will be easier for us to help you if you send us a screenshot. 

  • I can't check in with my OV-pas.

    There are two possible reasons. 

    1. Your OV-pas has been blocked for public transportation, for example because you do not have the required minimum balance. To fix this, see the answer to the question 'My OV-pas has been blocked for public transportation'.
    2. Your OV-pas has been reported lost or stolen.

    To find out more, check the display on the gate or card reader.

  • My OV-pas has been blocked for public transportation.

    If you didn't report your OV-pas as lost or stolen yourself, your card was blocked because you do not have the minimum required balance. Make sure there is at least € 20 on your OV-pas and try again after no more than 15 minutes.
