Using travel products

Information about how your details are used when travelling with an NS travel product.

What personal data do we use?

If you travel with us with a personal OV-chipkaart, an individual ticket, or an international ticket, we need to use some of your information to facilitate your trip. This information includes your card details, bank details, and travel details. You provided us with this information when you {a}purchased{/a} the product.

If you're the holder or booker of an NS Business Card from NS Zakelijk, we will use your business contact details if possible. This information was provided to us by you or by your employer.

What do we use your personal data for?

We use your personal information to facilitate travelling with an OV-chipkaart. We also use this information for our card machines and check-in/check-out poles. Finally, we use your information to enable the conductor to check your ticket.

The international ticket lets you pass through gates. The international ticket is also used to check your ticket in the train.

The principle for data processing is: the execution of the agreement. We only process the information required to use a personal travel product, as provided by you, insofar as it is necessary to enter into a traveler agreement with you, to execute this agreement, and to let you travel with NS. If you do not wish to share personal information with us, you can travel with a non-personal travel product.

The chip of an anonymous OV-chipkaart contains no personal information, such as your name or home address, but it does contain your travel preferences, such as your favourite stations or journeys. We do not track these preferences in detail: we cannot know when you travelled, for instance.

Compatible use: periodic pricing updates for NS-Business Collective.

We can periodically analyse the travel history of NS Business Card users, provided said card was or will be provided by your employer under the T&Cs of NS-Business Collective. We do this to offer your employer the most suitable rate, while offering NS-Business Card users extra benefits, such as free commuting, business travel and private travel. The data we use for this purpose cannot be used to identify individual users.

Compatible use: scientific research and statistics.

Finally, we can choose to commission or conduct scientific studies or statistical research. For said studies, it may possible or even necessary to process personal data, such as aggregated data on the number of people boarding and exiting trains at a particular station. In that case, we will take suitable measures, such as data pseudonymisation, taking the context in which the data were collected into account, and only publish said data after guaranteeing that any further processing will not have any consequences for any persons involved.

In case of scientific studies or statistical studies, we share data with scientific institutions such as universities or public organisations such as municipalities, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management or ProRail. These organisations cannot use the data to identify individuals and use the data to perform their duties in and around their station or to tailor the services offered to passengers' needs.

We also publish data that cannot be used to identify individual persons so that this data can be used for scientific or statistical purposes.

With whom do we share this data?

If you travel with an OV-chipkaart, we will share this information with TransLink. TransLink is responsible for issuing OV-chipkaarten, ensuring that they work properly, and processing the transactions made with the OV-chipkaart.

We will also share information with third parties if this is required to guarantee proper national coverage of the OV-chipkaart. A limited amount of functional information may be shared with TransLink and other public transport companies. For more information, please visit

If you purchase an international train ticket, your information will be registered by BeNe Rail International (an international collaboration between the NS and Belgische Spoorwegen) and by us to produce, issue, and guarantee the proper functioning of the ticket.

We will also share your information with the appropriate carrier, such as Eurostar or Thalys, to complete your booking. We have made agreements about the processing personal information with these parties, pertaining to how this information must be secured and stored.

Finally, we subcontract the execution of IT services to third parties. These third parties are registered data processors and process this information for our internal use alone. We have made agreements about the processing of personal information with these parties, pertaining to how this information is secured and stored, for instance.

We are authorised to provide your personal information to parties outside the European Economic Community under certain circumstances. In that event, we will take suitable measures with these parties, for example by agreeing to the standard provisions required by the European Commission.

How long do we store your data?

If you travel with NS, we will retain your personal information for up to 18 months after the date of the journey.
