Checking in and out
You can check in and out at the station using your debit card, OV-chipkaart or ticket. Read on to find out how.
How to check in and out
Hold your ticket or card against the card reader to your right. You will hear a beep and the gate will open. At the end of your journey, simply check out the same way. This time, you will hear two beeps.
You can check out until up to six hours after your journey. After that, you will no longer be able to check out, and a new journey will start instead. You can only go through gates displaying a green arrow.
Checking in and out with the same carrier
Make sure that you always check out from the same carrier you checked in with. Look above the card reader to see which carrier the scanner belongs to. NS scanners are yellow.
Passing through the gates without travelling
What if you just want to buy something at the station or wave someone goodbye? You will not have to pay for this as long as you check out from the same station within 60 minutes.
Checking in and out when transferring during your journey
When transferring, you may sometimes have to check out and in again. For example, you may have to do this to get to the right platform, or to switch to a different carrier.
Do you receive a discount during off-peak hours?
If so, carefully read the rules that apply to checking in and out with your ticket. Otherwise you may end up paying too much.
